Do you think its acceptable to call my DD Orla, rather than Orlaith? I would cringe at a Neve spelling but do you think this is just the same? Smile

I think you’re OK with Orla.

partofyoupoursoutofme · 04/01/2020 09:10

My understanding is that Orla is an accepted spelling in Ireland, so not cringy.

DramaAlpaca · 04/01/2020 18:50

In Ireland, Orla is pretty much the default spelling these days. It's fine.

schafernaker · 04/01/2020 20:32

Haha we had this exact conversation yesterday as we have a Niamh and Orla is on our (long) short list!

I believe that Orla without the fada on the a means vomit it Gaelic, but I would happily go with Orlà

abiirthdaycake · 04/01/2020 21:48

If there's a fada on Orla at all it goes on the O - the fada elongates the vowel (hence the name fada, meaning long)

schafernaker · 04/01/2020 21:56

Yes sorry, my bad. Baby brain 😂😂 I knew it was over a vowel

BeardieWeirdie · 05/01/2020 23:49

We have an Orlaith. Agonised over this until my phone auto-corrected Orla to Oral and I figured she'd never forgive me as a teenager.

Etcni · 05/01/2020 23:55

Echoing pp, please use Ó whichever ending you go for! I live in Ireland and know several O/Órlas but no Órlaiths or Órfhlaiths so it seems more like how Maeve is a common spelling of Méabh (and its many variants) even in Ireland rather than a 'Neve' or 'Keeva' bastardisation.

ImALostTeddyBear · 06/01/2020 01:12

It's fine. I also know an Orlagh.

ButterflyRuns · 06/01/2020 01:14

My Irish stepdad has a relative who uses the Orla spelling, you'll be fine.

FramingDevice · 06/01/2020 01:21

It’s used far more in Ireland than the other variants.

Definitely not Neve or Shivonne territory.
