Should I change the spelling?

Hi everyone,

I was hoping for a non biased opinion as family and friends tend to say what they think you want to hear.

My daughter is 3 and when we named her her name was unheard of which we liked, it's now in the top 100 but we spell it differently. We knew this was definitely her name and it really suits her. Her name is Aayla, pronounced to rhyme with Kayla. We originally were going with Ayla which is the now popular spelling, but when we told some family they pronounced it Isla which in traditional Hebrew is correct but it's also an Australian and Jamaican name pronounced the way we do. We don't actually have any problems with anyone misspronouncing it, if they're not sure they just say Isla but as Ayla is now becoming well known I'm in two minds whether to spell it that way before she starts school and learns the spelling. I like the look of Aayla, it's more balanced to me but I'm also very used to it.

Just stick with it. It's been three years.

We have a lily and would never chnahe the spelling even when she comes home with invites and Christmas cards with every other spelling known to man.

I’d pronounce Aalya like uh-liar
Do with that what you will

It’s a lovely name I’m not sure the spelling is going to matter much. I’d stick with it if it’s a bit different to the now more popular name. Stick by what you decided in the first place I’d say x

Thanks for the replies, I think you're right in that there are so many ways to spell pretty much every name now that it doesn't matter. I have a really common middle name but with a lesser known spelling which I always loved, and my daughter is very much like me. We are planning our third baby so I'm a little obsessed with baby name lists atm and Ayla keeps popping up so I started overthinking it, but Aayla definitely suits her 😊

She's three, leave it be.

Hello, this is my daughters name too, Aila (to rhyme with Kayla) and we really struggled with how to spell it without people pronouncing it Isla. I still have no idea if it was the right way to go but we stuck with it and just hope it doesn't cause too much confusion!

Jay87 · 02/01/2020 21:55

Yes it's really frustrating when you know it's their name but no idea how to spell it. I think you nailed it with Aila, I loved the y so I wanted a y spelling but Aila works perfectly 🙂

@Jay87 I thought that Aila seemed pretty easy but we have had Isla and Ella when people are trying to read it 🤷🏼‍♀️ I think it is just going to be one of those names no matter how it's spelt.

Jay87 · 02/01/2020 22:23

@tiddlertoddler oh really? That surprises me, I think it must just be one of those names 🤷

I’d pronounce Aalya like uh-liar

But the OP’s daughter’s name is Aayla. Not Aalya.
