Aria (pronunciation)

Trying to get name suggestions or opinions from my husband is usually like pulling teeth, but out of the blue today he said that he likes the name Aria for a girl. He pronounced it a- (like in apple) ree-uh. I actually think it's really pretty, but I feel like most people would read it as ar-ee-uh or ar-ya and make a Game of Thrones link to Arya Stark. As much as I liked GoT I'm not keen on people thinking I named my child after one of the characters, or giving a child a name that they spend the rest of their lives correcting people on. My husband says that in a few years time everyone will have forgotten about GoT and so it won't be as relevant. Opinions please? How would you read this name? Would anyone read it as a-ree-uh at first glance?

Agree with pp Ariadne nn Aria = short a sounds.

Grufallisfriend · 03/01/2020 07:12

I pronounce Ariella, Ariane and Ariadne all with a long A, like Aria.

Area has a short A Grin

Soawesome · 03/01/2020 09:58

Ariane would get you the pronunciation you want.
Everyone will pronounce Aria like the aria in an opera.
How about Arietty like in the Borrowers?

happycamper11 · 03/01/2020 09:59

Ah-ree-ah. My friend has one and I don't think she's ever had Ar-ya

happycamper11 · 03/01/2020 10:01

I'm not so keen on Ariella, sounds like a stomach bug or bacterial infection 😬

bluemoon2468 · 03/01/2020 10:01

Thanks for all the suggestions! Ariadne makes me think of spiders 😣 Not a fan of Arietty at all. I like Ariana but it just makes me think of Ariana Grande! Ariella/Arielle are both lovely names and I think most people would use a short a sound.

I like aria better than the other options and would definitely pronounce with a short a like in apple. The name is different to the word. But perhaps I am unusual in that.

OwlBeThere · 04/01/2020 03:31

Arian- the welsh for silver. Pronounced Ahrrr-yan would give you the short A you want.
I love all the variations but I’m especially fond of Arriety!

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 04/01/2020 03:37

This is one dh and I back and forthed over while I was pregnant last year. I'm like your dh Ah-re-ah when my dh is with you Are-ee-ah.

It's a beautiful name however said.

bluemoon2468 · 04/01/2020 11:33

@OwlBeThere I like Arian but I think it's a Welsh boy's name? Also makes me think of the 'aryan race' so not great connotations there!

Arian isn't a welsh name for anything other than silver or money.

Coughy4u · 04/01/2020 15:38

Are ya

OwlBeThere · 04/01/2020 15:47

I know a couple of Arians who are both female. So to me it’s feminine. Mike is technically correct that it’s a name, but I think anything can be a name personally. Language evolves, Hunter, Harlow, Ryder all surnames originally are used regularly as first names now. So if words are used as names they become names.

MikeUniformMike · 04/01/2020 15:57

Arian (welsh for silver) is pronounced ARR-yan.

I sometimes see wesh names suggested on here with how the poster says the name. Most often they are wrong.

One I've seen recently was Arianwen. It is a name. and is pronounced Arr-YAN-wen, not Arry-anwen. This is like suggesting that Penelope is pronounced Penny-Loppy.

I'm not keen an Aria as a name as it's just Air (e.g. Air on a g string)

bluemoon2468 · 04/01/2020 20:09

@MikeUniformMike I know nothing about Welsh! I just googled 'Arian name' and it came up with multiple sites listing it as a Welsh boy's name e.g. www.babynames.co.uk/names/arian/

Hmm. The pronunciation is wrong. Welsh is phonetic, so it wouldn't be pronounced like that.

Some name web sites give bonkers suggestions.

Eirian can be a girl or a boy's name but isn't easy to pronounce if you don't speak welsh. It's sort of EYRR-yan, and usually a girl's name.

Arianrhod is a girl's name - Arr-YAN-RHod. It doesn't have Rod in it.

Arianna is a girl's name but isn't welsh. It would be Arr-YAN-na if it was Welsh.

Whatsyourflava · 04/01/2020 20:57

How about Arabella

Or Aurelia

Or Athena

Or Amara

SophieGiroux · 05/01/2020 14:38

Ria? But simpler and easier to pronounce

Wotsitone · 17/10/2020 22:11

I have an Aria pronounces with a short a so don’t be scared to use it. People will use the version you tell them it is. I love it with a short a as a name and it is closer to the real Italian pronunciation like that. With a long a it sounds poncy and too Americanised.

Ladderofyears · 17/10/2020 22:49

I'd generally pronounce it like the word aria (in an opera).
I like it and I don't think it will be too associated with GoT because it's been around much longer.
If I came across one pronounced Arry-er I think I would be fine - it feels as though it fits with Ariadne, Arietty, Ariana...

Ellmau · 18/10/2020 00:24

Ariella is beautiful.

Or Ariane if not keen on Ariana/Ariadne.

tinseltitsandlittlegits · 18/10/2020 00:36

Very popular around here and pronounced arrrrgh rear

Wotsitone · 18/10/2020 08:05

I’m not even sure how the name ended up with the long are sound at the beginning in English. The name itself is split into two syllables the a then the ria. In English we don’t have an a that sounds like are. We have a short a like in apple and a long a that sounds like the letter a (ayy). The word itself is an Italian word and they only have a short sharp a which is like our apple a but pronounced with an open mouth as opposed to our more closed mouth version. The Areee ia version seems very Americanised like the way they say parsta as opposed to the way we say pasta and Are i Anna instead of Arianna. Like op said arrry a pronouncement is pretty and fits in with the way we say other English names.

user27378 · 18/10/2020 09:16

It depends where you live. Where I live in the North West it would be pronounced with a short a.

CaffiSaliMali · 18/10/2020 09:17

I would pronounce Aria as A ree uh with the A as in apple. I know someone who has an Aria and that's how they say it.

I would pronounce Arya as Are-yuh.

I don't associate Aria with Arya from GoT as to me they are both spelled and pronounced differently.

On arian - as Mike says it means silver and money. I would take most baby name sites with a pinch of salt with Welsh names, a lot of name sites pick random Welsh words and declare them names such as Artaith (torture/torment) Shock
