Should I change it?

Hi, my baby is nearly 2 weeks old and after much deliberation (and a previous thread) we decided to name her Briar, however, as much as I love the name something doesn’t feel right. We have had 2 negative comments but I have tried not to let it bother me, we go comments that out first daughters name was too ‘nicknamey’. Should I change it and if yes does anyone have any suggestions?

Surname begins with a D and is 2 syllables, dd1 is called Callie.

Briars are not hedges. They’re rambling plants found in hedgerows.

Briar is a lovely name and I would just ignore everyone else. People can find negative connotations about anything x

Veterinari · 31/12/2019 19:57

It sounds like as long as you aren’t Irish it’s fine!
In Scotland/England briars refer to briar roses - which are the beautiful pale pink wild roses - lovely!

Thorny shrubs would generally be referred to as brambles.

Regardless the meaning is irrelevant. We call girls Holly (also prickly) Ivy (poisonous)
And give boys names like Cameron (crooked nose) so I wouldn’t get caught up on the meaning.

I think Briar is beautiful Smile

Don't like it as in my regional accent it would sound like bra.

Engard · 31/12/2019 22:02

I think it's beautiful.
I read a negative comment about my daughters name not long before she was born and I still think about it 3 years later but... I don't like every name I hear and not everyone will like every name I like.
What matters is you like it.

Obsidian77 · 31/12/2019 22:09

What is it that doesn't feel right?
Just that other people have made negative comments, or that you don't think it fits your child?

I prefer Tara, by a long way

Dippitydoodle · 31/12/2019 22:11

It's a beautiful name, people can pick holes in any name. Don't let it get to you Flowers

Gemma2019 · 01/01/2020 13:49

I'll be honest I really prefer the name Tara.

When my DD was at toddler ballet there was a girl called Briar in her class and I'll always remember the mum being upset because she had received several invitations and Christmas cards addressed to Brian. People assumed it was a spelling or writing error. This was a decade ago so Briar is probably not so unheard of now though.

PlantPotting · 01/01/2020 13:51

Brian 🤣🤣

Brian will be much rarer that Briar these days I’d have thought

Any decisions made @RandDandC

Engard · 01/01/2020 16:27

I hear Briar and I think Sleeping Beauty! Not thorny bush 🤨
It's a Princess name

Mollie3 · 01/01/2020 21:13

As it means
Shrub/small tree
I personally would not name a baby girl this but I do like how it sounds!
Most people don’t seem to worry too much about name meanings from what I can gather.
Briar Rose? As in Rose as the middle name - fairytale association as previously mentioned.
If you don’t like the meaning or sound of it then change it, you will be saying it your whole life after all!
Have you registered it yet?

TatianaLarina · 01/01/2020 21:16

It doesn’t mean tree. And that doesn’t put people off Rowan, Willow, Hazel..

Astronica · 02/01/2020 05:45

I much prefer Briar over the other names on your list. Tara is okay but kind of 80s dated to me. Noelle feels both bland and American to me. Vivienne is okay but just not my taste. Briar manages to be warm, distinctive, feminine, strong and beautiful without being fussy or weird. Please only change it if you have doubts and not because of anything others say.

Apolloanddaphne · 02/01/2020 06:19

I love the name Briar. I knew an adult one and the name suited her so well.

rainbowstardrops · 02/01/2020 07:11

I think it's lovely!
I've worked with young children for nearly thirty years and I haven't come across one yet. That's a good thing in my book!
