Always set on Matilda. But recently come across Jemima and theres something quite darling about it.

Which would you prefer with brother Noah and why? Thanks.

I'm not keen on Noah - nice enough but I just see and hear No. At least 3 friends have a Noah so quite popular.
Matilda is nice but posssibly overused.
I like Jemima.
Not much help really.

mumofboys7 · 28/12/2019 15:35

MikeUniformMike Noah IS my sons name and he's had his name for 4 years. I asked for opinions on Matilda and Jemima Hmm

I really like Matilda, Jemima makes me instantly think of the scatty duck from betrix potter unfortunatly.

DramaAlpaca · 28/12/2019 15:41

I prefer Matilda.

Jemima will always be Jemima Puddleduck from Beatrix Potter to me, as a pp says. And I could be wrong, but I think I read somewhere (probably on here) that it has negative associations in the US.

MarshaBradyo · 28/12/2019 15:42

I like Jemima as long as it isn’t shortened to Jem

AryaNoOne · 28/12/2019 15:43

Definitely Jemima - a beautiful and less usual name with nice short options (I have a friend who goes by Mima). I know a lot of little Matildas so I would avoid that.

Wheresthesandman · 28/12/2019 15:43

I don’t think Matilda rolls off the tongue very easily, it feels a bit ‘forced’ if that makes sense? It’s probably partly that I don’t think as a word it sounds very nice. Tilly is sweet as a nickname but perhaps not for a teenager or adult woman. I really like Jemima but I know for some the Beatrix Potter connotations are strong!

I think Noah’s lovely Wink

Honeybee85 · 28/12/2019 15:44

Matilda. It’s such a lovely classic name that sounds good in any language. Very sophisticated and a nice combination with Noa Smile

Ohyesiam · 28/12/2019 15:45

Jemima sounds like a bit of a joke or pets name to me, maybe because of Jemima puddle duck.

MikeUniformMike · 28/12/2019 15:46

Your OP says you already have a Noah. I was only pointing it out as we have different taste. I said I know 3 Noahs and they're lovely little boys. Two of them called themselves No-no when tiny.

The name is fine.

Matilda is nice but to me Jemima is nicer.

SE13Mummy · 28/12/2019 15:49

Love the name Noah and think both Matilda and Jemima go well with it. I'd probably opt for Jemima because, like Noah, it's a biblical name. I also know of far fewer Jemimas than I do Matildas (DD1 is 15 and seems to be surrounded by Matildas!).

Bluebutterfly90 · 28/12/2019 15:51

Matilda.
I've always loved that name, and I cant shake the automatic association with Jemima Puddleduck for Jemima.
Think about how you feel towards the possible shortenings: do you like Jem, or Tilly? Or Jemma or Mattie?

MopsRUs · 28/12/2019 16:04

Jemima

lalafafa · 28/12/2019 16:04

There’s 6 Matilda’s in Ds’s year, 8 year olds. So common now.

moctodtensmum · 28/12/2019 16:07

I love them both. I would probably go with Matilda as it has so many great nicknames: Milly, Tilly, Tilda, Matty, Tills etc.

Jemima is slightly less used and also lovely.

I also like Tabitha which is my mind has a similar vibe.

LarkDescending · 28/12/2019 17:18

I prefer Jemima (love it in fact) - goes great with Noah, both being Biblical.

Matilda is nice too but more “expected” - lots of them about!

Robs20 · 28/12/2019 17:22

Love both!

EpcotForever · 28/12/2019 17:24

I know a Jemima and her sister is Matilda. Both lovely names.

Peachbubble · 28/12/2019 18:03

I prefer Jemima

daisypond · 28/12/2019 18:14

Jemima goes better, because it’s another Old Testament name.

Peacefrog23 · 28/12/2019 18:18

I prefer Matilda x

tamarisk44 · 28/12/2019 18:32

Jemima is so unusual, without being at all out there - lovely choice!

madcatladyforever · 28/12/2019 18:34

Neither as they manage to be old fashioned yet pretentious at the same time.

AriadneO · 28/12/2019 18:54

I think they're both lovely, but Matilda is probably more popular/prevalent than Jemima. Both have good nickname options too!

Absolutely ignore mikeuniform by the way. I've come across them multiple times on the names board being a complete snob/knob to people for no reason. Noah is a perfectly nice name.

dingdongmer · 28/12/2019 19:16

Jemima is lovely and not too popular
