Joss or Jos

DS2 is imminent. We like the name Joseph with Jos or Joss for short but disagree on the correct spelling. Will people call him Joe anyway?

Joss and if you call him Joss a lot it will catch on instead of Joe

Chocolateteabag · 27/12/2019 12:33

My Joss gets "Josh" a lot but is v quick to correct them
We have never had Joe

Joss/Jos - I never worry too much about x

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 27/12/2019 12:35

Not if you call him Joss. They'll call him what you call him. I love that name.

Full name on BC But always known as...

LittleReindeer · 27/12/2019 12:36

I wouldn’t pronounce them the same. I’d pronounce Joss as written but I’d say Jos like “Joz”.

sidsgranny · 27/12/2019 12:36

Our Joseph is a Joe. Jos/Joss is lovely too - I think whatever you call him will be what others use too. The cricketer Jos Buttler is a Joseph.

Great choice of name either way!!!

JacquesHammer · 27/12/2019 12:37

I’d go with Jos a la Jos Buttler.

Lovely shortening - if you use it, it will catch on. Most likely when he starts any childcare/educational setting you will be asked for his formal name and what he is known as.

sirmione16 · 27/12/2019 12:38

I think double s looks right, I'd question Jos thinking maybe it's joz or "j-oh-s" but joss is obvious 😁 and a really nice nickname I like it

pegsworth · 27/12/2019 12:39

Jos is 'yoss' in some languages, e.g. I know a Dutch man who pronounces his name like that

GrumpyHoonMain · 27/12/2019 12:41

All the josephs I know are Joes, Joses, or Sephs. Joss/Jos is short for Josephine surely?

Grufallosfriends · 27/12/2019 12:42

The natural shortening for Joseph is Joe.

I know a Jocelyn who's nickname is Joss.

Grufallosfriends · 27/12/2019 12:43

You say Joe seph and not Jos seph!

Bentoforthehorde · 27/12/2019 12:44

We call our Joseph Jos (pronounced Joe-ss) always shortened to Jos when written.
But often we call him Josie (Joe-see) always have, as part of a longer nickname.
To be honest I have 4 children and the nicknames we use were totally unplanned, these things just come about naturally.

MsChatterbox · 27/12/2019 12:46

In my head I said joss for joss and Joes (quick s) for jos

Grufallosfriends · 27/12/2019 12:48

Why not let a nickname develop naturally, it may be completely unrelated to his name?

ItProtectsMyHead · 27/12/2019 12:55

As a Dutch speaker I'd also pronounce Jos as 'yoss'

TheReluctantCountess · 27/12/2019 13:08

I’ve never thought of Joss as short for Joseph. Ds had a friend at primary school called Joss - it’s a lovely name.

MopsRUs · 27/12/2019 14:33

Jos could be pronounced Joz, so go for Joss which is unambiguous.

upaladderagain · 01/01/2020 22:15

Just call him Joss.

Astronica · 02/01/2020 01:07

Joss would be a better spelling as Jos could be pronounced as Joz. Joseph nn Joss is great.

lorn195 · 02/01/2020 14:54

My son has a friend called Jos, which is short for Josiah. I think that it's much better than Joss.

Poorolddaddypig · 02/01/2020 15:35

Surprised that so many people are saying that if you use nickname Joss it will catch on and everyone else will use it. Usually people say the opposite - that you can’t choose the nickname other people will use, and I agree with that. You can call him Joss or Jos but you can’t guarantee others will. I didn’t even know Joss was a nn for Joseph - I thought it was a name in its own right. I’d always shorten Joseph to Joe and I think the majority of people would?

Poorolddaddypig · 02/01/2020 15:36

I’ve also never heard of nn Seph for Joe but now I have I love it! And it makes perfect sense too? Why aren’t there more Sephs around?

Grufallisfriend · 02/01/2020 16:07

Seph pronounced Seff?! That's not nice imo.

Also, the emphasis of Joseph is on Jo.
