Help with boys names?

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 22/12/2019 23:01

25 weeks and we still aren’t any further forward with boys names. Current top four names are;
Freddie
Noah
Alex
Alistair

We don’t want any ‘J’ names as our surname is a J (think welsh version of smith!) so with that in mind and considering the ones we like above hit me with your suggestions!

I think Noah is gorgeous. I know it’s popular but it’s so lovely. My DH vetoed it but it would definitely be my choice!

KarenChungus1975 · 23/12/2019 16:09

Braydon, Haydon, Reagan or Champion! Crown Grin

daisypond · 23/12/2019 17:52

I like Alistair the best so far. The three syllables help no end with a one syllable surname.

MerryGrinch · 23/12/2019 18:24

I like Alistair

Isaac
Adam
Mitchell
Oscar

PlantPotting · 23/12/2019 18:50

Rudolphiana · 23/12/2019 18:51

Alistair would be a nice change from the more popular names.

MikeUniformMike · 25/12/2019 15:01

Tom's nice, and Aled is lovely, , or how about Samantha or Bridget for a girl?

Freddie - overused. Don't like Fred
Noah - overused. I just hear No.
Alex - One! One! One! One!
Alistair - like it a lot

DramaAlpaca · 26/12/2019 01:16

I love Alistair.

Alex is nice but better as a diminutive of Alexander.

I cannot bear Noah, it's a horrible, weak, whiny name.

I'm not mad on Freddie either.

JudgeMeNot · 26/12/2019 06:47

Mylo- I have a recent thing about this name spelt with a Y. No chance of me having a baby boy & naming him this

EugeniaGrace · 26/12/2019 07:00

I agree with @daisypond that I like the longer names best with a short last name. Of the suggestions above I think these sound the best:

  • Alistair
  • Elliot
  • Dominic
  • Christopher
  • Edward
  • Frederick (with Freddie as the nickname)
Whatelsecouldibecalled · 26/12/2019 13:12

I think if we went for Alex or Freddie he would be Alexander or Frederick but called the shorter versions.

Still can’t decide. Feel like it’s a massive decision!

Alex and Freddie are both quite popular names. With a popular surname, you will need a usable middle name, as Alex J might be one of two with that name.

I'm a late 1960s baby, and there were a few incidences of Firstname Middlename Surnames (Placename) at school - more than one incidence of two kids in the same year having the same full name.

Grufallosfriends · 26/12/2019 14:17

I know several Steve Smiths! And two Alex Taylors!

So yes, I'd avoid a popular first name if you have a common surname.

PlantPotting · 26/12/2019 14:50

You could pick a more unusual name though and there’s still no guarantee of being the only one. There’s no Oliver’s/Ollie’s at my daughters school (statistically 1 in every 100 boys called number 1 name of Oliver), yet theres two boys called Fox

Grufallosfriends · 26/12/2019 15:04

But by picking a name outside the top 100 you reduce the risk significantly!

My dc's name was used 30 times when they were born and we have yet to meet another.

MikeUniformMike · 26/12/2019 15:05

These weren't two Steve Smiths or two Alex Taylors, they were something like two Stephen John Smiths and two Alexandra Jane Taylors.

It was a school where a large proportion of pupils had the most common Welsh surnames - Jones, Davies, Williams, Roberts and Evans IIRC.

An unusual middle name can make a difference if the firstname and surname are quite common. Catherine Jones doesn't stand out without the Zeta.

Thanks for the input everyone. Not great with quirky names I’m a bit boring. Also a teacher so names are an issue due to the darlings or not so darlings that I teach!!
