How do you all think for this name? (gamers might like?)

Hi ladies, I'm new here so sorry if I'm not familiar or posting the right thing!
I am currently pregnant with a baby girl, with a hubby and young son anxiously awaiting! So I am Polish and DH is Welsh. Our first born and son is named a more UK traditional name and we decided to name our girl something more Polish. I really like the name Klementyna (pronounced clemenTEENA) and I am also a massive fan of the Walking Dead video games where the girl protagonist is called clemenTEEN.
I've had some ladies from my baby group say that in the UK, Clementine won't stick in my preferred pronunciation and it's really pronounced clemen TINE.
So it sounds like a dumb question but how can I make a pronunciation of a name stick? I just love the name and I want my daughter to not feel bad to correct it at school! I remember having to constantly correct my first name and I don't want her to go thru that, (hopefully she's not as painful shy as me sad )
Thanks so much!
Lena

Hate to burst your bubble OP but the character in the Walking Dead is called ClemenTYNE not TEEN.

Soon2BeMumof3 · 20/12/2019 02:43

If you want people to think twice about the pronunciation then perhaps go with the polish version?

But if you name her Clementine then I think everyone will just use the common pronunciation, which in English speaking countries is probably the 'tine' sound at the end.

I don't think there is a way to control what other people are going to do, except politely correct people who get it wrong. If you're shy then that will be hard for you, so if it were me I'd name her something else.

I think your child would spend their entire life correcting everyone one the spelling and pronunciation of their name. Don’t do it.

Soon2BeMumof3 · 20/12/2019 02:43

@LittleReindeer yeah I played that game and thought so too. I'm not sure how OP heard it as 'teen' TBH. The accents maybe?

safariboot · 20/12/2019 02:52

I'm a Brummie, DM's a southerner, we both pronounce the fruit clemen-teen, like in teenager. Not clemen-tyne like in Tyneside.

Bowerbird5 · 20/12/2019 02:58

Clementeena would be unlikely to mispronounced.

At school it should be a problem. There are quite a few Polish and Bulgarian, Romanian children and we check with parents. I think it is a lovely name by the way.

Astronica · 20/12/2019 03:14

Either call her Klementyna pronounced as you do, or call her Clementine pronounced the usual British way to rhyme with fine. Either way they are both lovely names.

bananahood · 20/12/2019 03:23

Nice name. I've known several Polish kids whose names are pronounced differently in English, but I just ask them/their parents their preference and go for that. I think most people are respectful of your preferred pronunciation.

MrsNoMopp · 20/12/2019 03:40

I'd pronounce Clementina as ClemenTEEna. Same ending as Christina (ChrisTEEna).

Thetimetravelerswife · 20/12/2019 04:39

I would pronounce clementina as Clement-teena

Whilst I’d pronounce clementine as clement-tyne.

Go with clementina then? But I would avoid polish spelling to make her life easier

grisen · 20/12/2019 05:02

I’d go with polish spelling but I am also a foreigner in the UK. Although we did go with a name that’s pronounced similarly in English and my native language.
and for what it’s worth I’d pronounce Klementyna as ClemenTEENA and it’s a beautiful name.

Mglena92 · 20/12/2019 05:33

@LittleReindeer yes I know! I wanted to edit the post but I couldn't! Baby brain mode!

I'd go with the Polish spelling, people will learn. You shouldn't have to anglicise a polish name if you don't want to.

CatteStreet · 20/12/2019 05:41

'Either call her Klementyna pronounced as you do, or call her Clementine pronounced the usual British way to rhyme with fine. Either way they are both lovely names.'

Yup. And no need to anglicise the spelling to 'make her life easier' (i.e. assimilate).

That said, I had the bilingual 'problem' and chose reasonably international names that had only minor variations in pronunciation (you'd be surprised, though, at the differences in what seems like the most straightforward of names).

CatteStreet · 20/12/2019 05:44

should also add I prefer Klementyna, though usually not a fan of K spellings for C/K names (e.g. Clara/Klara). I have never liked the 'eyene' pronunciation of names ending in ine.

Veterinari · 20/12/2019 05:54

Phonetically Klementyna reads as ‘Clemen TYNE’ in English.
The Y is always pronounced like Tyne never teen so I actually think the Polish spelling would ensure you get the less preferred pronunciation

daisypond · 20/12/2019 06:32

The usual British way to pronounce it is Clemen-TEEN. I’ve only ever known it like that, the way Churchill’s wife pronounced it, rhyming with Josephine. The other pronunciation - tyne- is very Australian or American.

Elllicam · 20/12/2019 06:38

I would also think Clemen teen/teena.

BonBon411 · 20/12/2019 07:40

Clementine is lovely 😊
