Spelling change

Hi, my niece is called Avery, they have always pronounced it (Av-rey) and are now debating changing the spelling to Avrey or Avrie as it’s always being miss-pronounced. Anyway, they were wondering if they could have some advice on what to do and if you think they should change it what spelling should they go for?

(Avery is 3)

We changed my daughter's name spelling at 4 months and the best decision we made;100% the right decision. The official side of things is very straight forward before a year... But I think it has to be deed poll after then, are they okay with that?

FizzyGreenWater · 17/12/2019 18:44

If they're saying Av-ree then yes they need to change it, as Avery is a totally different name Confused People are naturally going to say Ay-ver-ee with that spelling, that's the name!

If it's just the A sound which is different it's slightly trickier though, are they saying Ah-ver-ee instead of Ay-ver-ee? If so, Avarie would be better? Made up, though...

Avery (ay-ver-ee) is a name.

God knows why they're pronouncing it Av-rey?! Never heard that pronunciation or name.

Changing the spelling I suppose is the only way to get people to say the name that you say - but obviously it's actually the parents fault for mispronouncing the name they've chosen!

Avrie will be said Av-ree not Av-rey. They maybe need to be absolutely clear on the pronounciation before they mess up another spelling...

Thetimetravelerswife · 17/12/2019 19:25

Yes change it. I would have assume Avery was pronounced ay-ver-ree.

I would go with the Avrie spelling.
Because it reminds me of the name Avril and then rie makes it look a bit “frenchy”.

So I would pronounce Avrie as how you want and also assume it’s a pretty French name.

Thetimetravelerswife · 17/12/2019 19:26

Oh I just realised so u want it pronounced rey as in ree
Or rey as in Rae?

Hatscarfandgloves · 17/12/2019 19:30

Better to change it now or just pronounce it the normal way?

TheClausSeason · 17/12/2019 19:35

I wouldn't bother. If it's changed now, I think it would count as an official name change and she'd have to declare it on all paperwork forever. It's a pain and was a foreseeable problem, but I'd live with it for now and let her change it if she wants to when she's older.

TheClausSeason · 17/12/2019 19:37

... or see if she wants to change the way it's pronounced when she's older.

I'm not clear how you're pronouncing the first syllable - 'a' as in cat or 'ai'? I understand that you are also making it 2 syllables instead of the usual 3 in Avery.

If both things are different to the usual Avery then I would change it to Avrie. If it's only the syllables that are different (ie you are pronouncing 'A' as 'Ai') then I would just retain Avery as it's only a slight difference in pronunciation.

TildaTurnip · 17/12/2019 23:24

Are they pronouncing it:
Aiv-ree
or
Avv-ree

ineedaholidaynow · 17/12/2019 23:30

So they chose one name for their niece and spelt it using a different name?

For their daughter, presumably. I think it's OP's neice.

TheClausSeason · 18/12/2019 05:51

*niece

Littleheart5 · 18/12/2019 13:06

Would it be better to slightly change their own pronunciation?!
