As in the wife of Richard I? I’ve only ever seen it written down, and have no idea of stress pattern or if hard/soft ‘g’

(It’s ok, it’s for a pet not a person)

Came on to say omg!!
Who is the designated dpet shouterer?
Imo they get to choose!!
Standing in the garden shouting Berry may be best ..

flowery · 15/12/2019 14:17

I’d pronounce it beh run gair ee ah, with a schwa in the ‘run’ bit.

Peachbubble · 15/12/2019 14:49

I'd say Beren (like Seren) and garia (as in Bulgaria)

VanyaHargreeves · 15/12/2019 14:51

Beh-ren-gah-ree-a

I would have thought

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/12/2019 14:56

Will sound a lot like Ben and Jerry's if you don't use the hard g

FainaSnowChild · 15/12/2019 14:57

Berren- GAR- ear
Is my guess....

DramaAlpaca · 15/12/2019 14:58

Like flowery said.

CharitySchmarity · 15/12/2019 21:15

I don't think I've ever heard it said out loud but I've always believed its BerrenGARia. So short e at the beginning, and a long A in the GAR bit.

It can't be a soft G, G is always hard before an A.

DivGirl · 15/12/2019 21:53

Beh-rn-GAH-reeah

Whathappenedtothelego · 15/12/2019 21:58

I know a Berengère and she's pronounced Bare on zhair, so would pronounce it like that with ia on the end.

Musmerian · 16/12/2019 20:09

I had a friend whose middle name was Berengaria. It’s pronounced Ber- en- gare- ia.

Charlottejbt · 16/12/2019 20:45

I know a Berengère and she's pronounced Bare on zhair, so would pronounce it like that with ia on the end.

When I first heard that name I wasn't sure if it was an occupational title, like boulangère! I'd never encountered it in the UK. Very nice for a pet, I think.

Winterdaysarehere · 16/12/2019 21:30

Looks like a weird anagram of Ben and Jerry's..

MikeUniformMike · 16/12/2019 22:09

If it is for a dog it is too long.

Alwayswithalacrity · 16/12/2019 22:12

Bur en gairia .

CaptainCabinets · 17/12/2019 04:08

How ridiculous. I can’t stand traditional ‘pet’ names but this is just try-hard, especially as you don’t know how to pronounce it. It looks to me like you’ve chosen it so you can very cleverly explain it to anyone who asks.

If it’s for a cat or dog, how about Boudicca? It fits with the historical theme, starts with a B, and it won’t sound stupid when you shout it. Cats and dogs won’t respond to long names like bloody Berengaria.

Weathergirl1 · 17/12/2019 20:10

I've only ever come across it as the name of a liner that Cunard owned in the 1920s and 30s - fairly sure they pronounced it Beren-gar-eea

QueenOfTheAndals · 17/12/2019 20:19

Her name was actually Berenguela which, if you're set on the name, is easier to pronounce.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 17/12/2019 20:24

According to a name website

Pronunciation: Beh-REN-gah-REE-ah

Berengaria Origin and Meaning
The name Berengaria is a girl's name meaning "bear spear".
Berengaria was one of the medieval queens of England - married to Richard I (also known as Richard the Lionheart). She was originally from Navarre (in modern northern Spain) and despite being the Queen of England, she only lived in England after her husband had died. Despite its royal roots, Berengaria is one of the less attractive medieval names, although it gets points for having an unusually strong meaning for a feminine name.

FlaviaAlbia · 17/12/2019 20:26

I've heard it pronounced "bair en gar aye a". I can't remember if it was Cadfael or that radio 4 program that had dramatised murder mysteries for crime writers to solve though so that might affect the accuracy Grin

iVampire · 22/12/2019 11:13

Being over-elaborate (‘try hard’) was kind of the whole point!

It would be Berry day to day. The teens had already come up with ‘Ben&Jerry-a’ which we thought was a plus point

Thank you all who helped with the pronunciation. I’m glad that how I would say it is now pretty much confirmed as majority way.

The name works for us for various reasons, but I’m still not sure!

I used to live near Berengaria in Cyprus ( British army base). Everyone said it Bear-in-Gare-eea. (Gare as in Dare).
