Seamus

I started a thread about Jesse recently which is my favourite name without a doubt. My DH has said he would go with it but I can just tell he doesn't really like it and thinks it's girly so we are still discussing names. I want us to both be happy!

His favourite all time name is Seamus (he is Irish) he said we can use Shay as a nickname or Seami for a baby.
James is a family name on both sides which is also a nice link (Seamus is Irish for James for those that aren't aware)
I like it and think Shay is cool for a teenager and Seamus is cute and also a solid adult name.
I just wondered how it would be perceived in the UK? I'm familiar with it due to DH but is it seen as an old irish man name to most people? Does it go with Rory?
I can see Shay is a commonly used name in Ireland but no sign of Seamus in the top 100 which makes me think it's out of fashion even in Ireland!
Opinions welcome!

Is asking “is it a family name” rude then? I ask people all the time - I better stop in that case @AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet

Anyway love Seamus nickname Shay

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 15/12/2019 17:39

Only if it is said in a disapproving tone @PlantPotting Xmas Wink

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 15/12/2019 17:42

Like this... 'Oh... Séamus? Is it..... a family name'?

PlantPotting · 15/12/2019 17:42

Ok thank you, no I wouldn’t say it like that but I will be more careful o think. Thank you @AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet x

PlantPotting · 15/12/2019 17:46

@Peacefrog23 I think you were asking about the name Seamus /Shay recently too so am tagging you in this thread incase of interest - sorry if I’ve got the wrong person 🙈

BikeRunSki · 15/12/2019 17:53

DS has a friend (10) called Seamus. His grandad calls him Shamy, his mates call him Shay

I have a friend called Seamus - 40s- who is known to everyone as Sean. I don’t know how this happened, but he really is actually Sesmus.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 15/12/2019 17:54

@PlantPotting Or accompanied by a face like this: 😕

I'm sure you've never been rude Xmas Smile

MoiraRose · 15/12/2019 18:03

I'm of Irish descent with a very Irish surname, though I've lived in England my entire life, but DM wanted me to call DS Seamus. I stuck with the very safe James, but it is a nice name, just not in the sticks of a northern village where I live!

Jj2431 · 15/12/2019 20:50

Seamus is lovely

Astronica · 15/12/2019 22:41

I love Seamus and love it for Rory's brother. Not so keen on Shay but don't mind it so much as a nickname.

tamarisk44 · 15/12/2019 22:43

Didn't think I liked the name but actually it goes perfectly with Rory!

The correct spelling is indeed Séamus. The fada is needed as it's the irish language, not English. Lovely name.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 16/12/2019 07:34

Don't be ridiculous, Ruth.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 16/12/2019 08:39

I thought so @Notimeforaname Thanks for clarifying. Maybe people already know that and just aren't typing the fada. My husband's name has a fada and I never use it in text, but I do if I'm handwriting Xmas Confused

@RuthB91 I think children happen to be far more inclusive and less ignorant than many adults on these threads Smile

Batmanandrobin123 · 16/12/2019 10:19

Ok well if we go with it then I'll definitely use the fada, thanksSmile

I really don't think it's a name that invites bullying. If it stands out too much he can always just use Shay anyway, but we live in London and there will be plenty more unusual names than Séamus. My sons best friend is a Ruaridh and he has another friend called Skylar (boy) so it's not like everyone is going to he called Oliver and Jack.

@Batmanandrobin123 it’s absolutely not a name that is going to get bullied. Sadly if a child is going to get bullied, they will, irrespective of name. I used to love in London and the ranges of names there is crazy. I don’t think I ever met an Oliver. Even In the small town I live in now, there’s 2 boys called Fox x

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 16/12/2019 12:44

What on Earth is bullyable about Séamus? Confused is it because it sounds like shame?

Winterdaysarehere · 16/12/2019 13:11

My ds is prob the most popular boy in his whole school!! No bullying for being a Shay!!

Peacefrog23 · 16/12/2019 13:15

There is nothing wrong with seamus it is a nice name but personally, i prefer just shay.
Unfortunately to me, Seamus sounds very similar to 'shamless' which makes me think of the tv programme shamless.

Thank you though @PlantPotting x

FizzyGreenWater · 16/12/2019 15:16

Not a fan - sounds fat and dumpy to me.

PlantPotting · 16/12/2019 15:24

I prefer Shay too @Peacefrog23 - more modern sounding to my ears. But love Seamus too. I have added this name to shortlist! Thank you.
