Sorry it got posted before I could complete the post.

Pronunciation 2 :

What is the best way to spell this name so that people will not confuse it with Diana? I am worried that people will read her name as Diana if I use the spelling Dhyana.

Thank you in advance

I've never heard of the name until this thread, of course I have heard Diana.

From reading this I pronounced it naturally as the first video.

Beautiful name by the way

MiniGuinness · 14/12/2019 04:59

Where is it from?
The first pronunciation is very common in Spanish speaking countries. I really really don’t like Dee-ahhhhhhh-naaaahhhhrr though, like the second pronunciation

FairytaleofBykerGrove · 14/12/2019 05:25

I know two Romanian Diana’s - one adult, one child - who pronounce their name this way. It was very easy to pick up.

OwlBeThere · 14/12/2019 05:35

I’m hearing two very different pronunciations there.
The first being thee-AHN-na
The second being Dhee-ahhh-naaa.

The first is nicer to my ear and I would stick with the dhyānā spelling. I wouldn’t look at that and think it was Diana, particularly with the accents.

DoTheHop · 14/12/2019 05:35

It sounds like the Italian way of pronouncing our British Diana.
'i' in Italian is pronounced 'ee'.
If you're not happy with people pronouncing the name as it's spelt, then you could go for 'Deyahna'
My name is French. I'm not French. Neither am I British. So my name is pronounced the way my parents pronounce it. Think 'Du-wayne' vs 'Derran' vs. 'Dovayne' vs 'Doven'.
I let people pronounce it as they will.

Rosehip345 · 14/12/2019 05:38

As read I’d have pronounced it Diana, sorry.

DoTheHop · 14/12/2019 05:39

There's not much point in me saying my name, as people pronounce it in their own accents anyway.

DoTheHop · 14/12/2019 05:41

Ds has a name not spelt in the typical way. It's always misspelt. Apart from close family and his teachers, everyone spells it the more typical way.

sashh · 14/12/2019 05:49

I'd use Dhyana. Lovely name.

SD1978 · 14/12/2019 06:34

Simple answer- you won't. People will pronounce it Diana, if in UK and you can correct them and hope they start using the pronunciation you want- but you'll spend a lot of time correcting people as it's not a typically brutish name.

Clangus00 · 14/12/2019 06:47

I read it as Diana too.

miahadalittlelamb · 14/12/2019 07:57

Hi, where will your baby grow up?

If in the UK I would definitely suggest the Diana spelling. Your baby will really appreciate it.

She can pronounce it how she likes, but the Diana spelling will make life easier for her.

lljkk · 14/12/2019 08:21

Spell it phonetically, Deeanna.

Ash85sam · 14/12/2019 19:41

@MiniGuinness this name is Sanskrit and is from South Asia, where most languages are based on Sanskrit. It means meditation.

I agree with pp. That will be a difficult name in the UK if you want to avoid Diana.

lljkk · 14/12/2019 19:49

Apparently the correct spelling is ध्यान. Go for that. English people will love you for it.

Ash85sam · 14/12/2019 20:25

Thank you @Rezaminelli

@OwlBeThere thank you for your input

@DoTheHop thank you. I was considering the alternative spelling Dheyana. The truest sound to this name is the-Yana, so it's really hard to see where it fits.

@sashh thank you. It means meditation and we love it too.

I know a Dayana, who has a pronunciation close to the first video.

Ash85sam · 14/12/2019 20:37

@lljkk lol I think that's Hindi language. This name is Sanskrit and is based on Buddhism and Hinduism as the word means meditation. I have South Asian roots (not Indian) so I want a Sanskrit baby name.

Dheyana will be best Imo.
