Alliteration Names

Our last name starts with a hard B sound and my hubs has placed almost a ban for lack of better term on any name that starts with a B. Anyone out there have a name with a "harsh" letter sound name their child with the same letter/sound? Is this a bad idea to do to a potential child?

It didn't do Boris Becker, Brigitte Bardot or Brenda Blethyn any harm.

LarkDescending · 11/12/2019 18:50

Is B a particularly harsh letter?

Ben Brown
Beatrice Blake
Belinda Bellingham
Barnaby Burton

...are all random examples but sound fine to me.

LarkDescending · 11/12/2019 18:52

Actually maybe not Belinda Bellingham (Bel...Bel...) but there you go!

MikeUniformMike · 11/12/2019 18:52

or Brian Blessed or Billy Bragg

Bjorn Borg
Brooklyn Beckham
Bobbi Brown

I like a lot of alliterative names - of chosen well they can be very bold and stylish.

LarkDescending · 11/12/2019 18:56

*if chosen well

Both my children have alliterative names. It wasn’t planned this way- we just liked those names. I really like the way they sound. I think the number of syllables in each name makes a difference

PlantPotting · 11/12/2019 19:27

I LOVE alliterative names 💓

Ellmau · 11/12/2019 19:40

It depends on the name, but there is a tendency to sound a bit comic.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 11/12/2019 19:42

My DD’s initials are KC and both as a hard C sound. I think it’s fine but will be name depended. Some combinations will sound ridiculous.

Mumshappy · 11/12/2019 19:43

My niece has one. It's a harsh sounding surname with a softer first name. It works.

doritosdip · 11/12/2019 19:52

If you pick an alliteration with K I think you'll get Kardashian questions but B is fine imo. A bit Marvel comics Peter Parker Etc but I think it's fine.

needsomehelptoday · 11/12/2019 20:11

I'm trying to figure out what a hard B sound is?

ikeakia · 12/12/2019 06:51

I assume the ‘hard B’ sound is like the ‘B’ in ‘Burton’ as opposed to a slightly softer sound in something like ‘Beaton’.

That might just be my ears!

My friend is a BB, she has always had that as her nickname rather than a shortening of her first name (she loathes the obvious short version). I think it's fine.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/12/2019 07:07

I have an alliterative name, I love it. Its always flowed really well.

hannahfaith · 12/12/2019 15:35

@ikeakia you're correct I should've specified. Our last name has the beginning sound like Burton and is a long Polish last name (-ski ending)
