Currently thinking about this name and leaning towards the Rebekah spelling.

Do you know any Rebecca's/ Rebekah's under 10?
or is it too dated to use?

I have a Rebecca, though a lot older than 10. Beautiful, classic name, unfortunately apparently means heifer according to some sources.

I know the MN obsession with nicknames, Rebecca gives you plenty to choose from, Becca, Becky, Bex, Becks etc etc.

I would stick to the Rebecca spelling. you will find that surprisingly very few people manage to spell it properly anyway, lots of extra r and b randomly inserted , with the odd extra e, sometimes a dropped c or a ck popped in for effect. I dread to think what would happen with a Rebekah spelling!

Thetimetravelerswife · 10/12/2019 15:15

Prefer the Rebecca spelling.

But very dated, I apologise but not a fan!
Though I have a feeling MN will be cooing all over it calling it an underused classic.

If you call ur DD Rebecca most likely she will share her name with lots of her friend’s mum’s.

Mamabear88 · 10/12/2019 20:46

I'm Rebecca. I like my name (usually go by Becca) - not keen on the Rebekah spelling at all though, sorry. And never heard of the heifer link either. I personally would rather go for a 'dated' name than a super common one where they'll be one of five in their class.

KittenVsXmastree · 10/12/2019 20:51

I know one Rebecca under 10.
I know about 5 Rebecca's who are in their early 40s, and one Rebekah in her late 30s.

PlantPotting · 10/12/2019 20:59

@Mamabear88 yes I see what you mean a Rebecca won’t be one of 5 in her class but at the same time she’ll have the same name as loads of her mum’s friends and aunties. And that’s a bit uncool for a child. It would be like a child of the 1980s being called Sue or Pauline. Yes the only one in the class but the same name as all the dowdy dinner ladies 🤣

Hmm - we had this as an option for ds but had 2 dss and no dds! I like both spellings. I prefer Rebekah but Rebecca is likely to be easier for everyone and lends itself to more nicknames. Really love it though.

VenusClapTrap · 10/12/2019 23:13

I prefer the Rebekah spelling. I don’t think it sounds dated.

MrsNoMopp · 10/12/2019 23:15

I know one Rebekah of secondary school age, none of primary age. I like the name but prefer the Rebecca spelling.

IdblowJonSnow · 10/12/2019 23:17

I like both spellings but prefer the non-Hebrew spelling.
And yes, I will 'coo' and say it's an 'under used classic'!

BennyTheBall · 10/12/2019 23:17

Not keen on the biblical spelling.

Pipandmum · 10/12/2019 23:18

I dont know any Rebeccas but I hate the other spelling. She'll forever have to spell it out for people.

Littleheart5 · 10/12/2019 23:19

Love love Rebecca! Would be on my list but for our surname. So feminine and strong at the same time. I think Rebekah is the traditional Hebrew spelling but to me that looks a bit like you’re trying to make it unique so I’d probably stick with Rebecca. Don’t agree with the ‘dates’ argument. It’s a classic like Anna/ Sarah/ Emma etc and to my mind they never date.

Littleheart5 · 10/12/2019 23:20

*dated not dates

Divebar · 10/12/2019 23:25

I know three adults, one is Rebecca, one is Becky and one is Bex. The fact that I don’t know a single child with that name would be a bonus. It’s different enough without having to resort to anything too out there. I prefer the spelling above.

username1724 · 10/12/2019 23:27

My sister is Rebecca (Goes by Becca) and I was always envious of her name, I love it! Not keen on the Rebekah spelling but otherwise a lovely choice with so many choices for nicknames

Whoops75 · 10/12/2019 23:30

Rebecca is lovely the other spelling isn’t as nice imo

BackforGood · 10/12/2019 23:37

Another who prefers the Rebecca spelling. Why make life more difficult than it need be?

My dds both have names that would fit into this category of "everyone has heard of the names but they never come across other people their age with their names".
They both like it.
My ds has one of only about 6 names that it seems were allowed to be given to boys in the year he was born - he's never been in a class or team or group of any kind where there aren't others with his name. It can be a bit of a pain.
My dds are both very happy being the only dc with their names.

Salvationiseasy · 10/12/2019 23:37

My name is Rebekah, I’m in my 20s, I love it! The Hebrew spelling actually means “to tie a knot”. You should go for it if you like it. I’ve found children grow into their names, you can call them anything.

Astronica · 11/12/2019 06:43

I love Rebecca/Rebekah and don't find it dated. I know of one about 5 yrs old. Rebekah is my favourite spelling but both are good.

17caterpillars1mouse · 11/12/2019 07:49

I really like Rebecca though I don't know any under 10

I know, 1 late 30s Rebecca and 1 30 year old Rebecca, then a 29 year old Rebekah.

I like both spellings

diddlediddle · 11/12/2019 08:41

Rebecca is beautiful and quite rare now

Rebekah seems clunky and unnecessarily complicated
