StCyr

Hi all,
My husband and I got married in January. We are TTC now.
I have French roots and my husband is from an African country but both of us have been living in the UK (me - 20 years and he 12 years)
StCyr is an Old French surname meaning Victory. If we had a girl we would like to call our child this and pronounce it Sincere as in my husbands country it is very popular to call your child things like that (Praise, Glory etc)
I actually know a little girl who is currently 4 with this name but I haven't had chance to talk to her mum yet about it
Totally hypothetical now but AIBU to want to call a girl, if we have one StCyr but pronounce it Sincere?

Of all the names mentioned; I think Honor is the best.
It's got a cool 60s vibe like Honor Blackman

You simply can't load a child with a name they'll spend their whole life pronouncing and spelling for the world it's just not fair

Glad you've taken the feedback here

'God bless Lily St Cyr'.... lyrics from Rocky Horror pic show is what I first think of when I hear this name. She was a 40s burlesque dancer.

This was where my head went to, too.

But then again, I am a wild and an untamed thing, I'm a bee with a deadly sting...

It wouldn't work at all in France. As has been pointed out StCyr isn't a name at all. (Saint) Cyr is, but even so it's pretty obsolete: www.prenoms.com/prenom/CYR.html

and that's even before you get onto the military connotations. Honestly if I met a Saint-Cyr I'd presume the parents were far right voters.

Leaving aside the wisdom of calling a child Saint Cyr - the fact of it being old-fashioned isn’t really the point - the French at least can recognise and pronounce it.

In the U.K. it would cause so much confusion Saynt/Sunt/Sin Sire/Kire would be likely renditions.

It's not just old-fashioned, it's wilfully obsolete. Cyr might have some retro chic I suppose but Saint-Cyr is, like, Marine Le Pen territory.

Sure but some people intentionally hunt out obscure and yoonique names. For them the obscurity wouldn’t be a minus. The military college might.

It's got real political connotations that are, shall we say, unfortunate.

TatianaLarina · 07/12/2019 12:38

I don’t dispute that.

It’s a bit like calling someone Farage. But some people don’t care about politics.

and anyway the link is for the name Cyr (which is an exact homonym for "cire", wax...) not Saint-Cyr which is a surname, not a name, and certainly not StCyr.

I’d pronounce it similar to Sancerre. I think it will be a pain of a name.
