Fiadh or Roisin?

Hi all

I know this has probably been done to death but any help with Irish girls names gratefully received. I'm Irish and DH is English, we are living in the UK.

Baby is due this week... we don't know what it is actually but if it's a boy I think we are set on Fionn. DH seems to be able to pronounce it okay!

I'm a bit more stuck on girls names for some reason and again think it's now down to Fiadh or Roisin.

Fiadh (fee-a) means wild or little deer, depending on what you read
Roisin (ro-sheen) means little rose

I liked Caoimhe but DH can't cope with the spelling and said it's like Quavers.... Hmm

I've also thought about Aoife and I like Éabha but not mad about the spelling for some reason - I don't know why but I don't think it looks pretty!

Any views on Fiadh or Roisin, which do you think you would choose?

Edel is lovely

PotteryWheel · 01/12/2019 22:51

Exactly, @Mindy. (Or an ‘aoi’.) I’ve come across similar from time to time, but there’s no dialect of Irish in which ‘—eann’ can make the sound ‘—een’.

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 01/12/2019 23:00

I think some people make the mistake of thinking Irish is like English and they can play fast and loose with spelling and pronunciation to fit the sound and aesthetic they want for names but Irish language rules are fixed. It’s a real bugbear of mine to see/hear an Irish name butchered or even just a load of letters tossed together to create a made up “Irish” name.

FenellaVelour · 01/12/2019 23:14

Roisin to me is an adults name

Funnily enough she won’t always be a baby 😬

I really like both names. Written down, Fiadh is prettier but spoken aloud I prefer Roisin.

AngelaScandal · 02/12/2019 09:03

Is Aurnia ‘Aine’?

PotteryWheel · 02/12/2019 09:07

Is Aurnia ‘Aine’?

God, @Bosco, I think you're right. Grin Hmm Seriously?

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 02/12/2019 09:51

Róisín means 'little rose', so if anything, it would be more suitable for a child.
Róise (Ro-sha) is beautiful too, although I do prefer Róisín. Róisín is probably the most beautiful Irish name, IMO of course.

I think a lot of those 'Irish baby names' websites are American or written by people who don't know how to pronounce them

bigshiplittleboat · 02/12/2019 11:03

Careful - Roisin is often turned into ruh-SHEEN in the north of England, I think Fiadh is harder to mispronounce

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 02/12/2019 11:27

I can’t help hearing that “careful” in my mum’s “serious (but actually nothing at all to worry about) information being given out now because I know so much better than you” tone Grin

TatianaLarina · 02/12/2019 13:44

I like both but I think Fiadh is harder to mangle with a British accent.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 02/12/2019 16:37

Is Róisín difficult with a British accent?!
Row (row your boat) sheen (Charlie Sheen) Simple Xmas SmileXmas Smile

TatianaLarina · 02/12/2019 17:49

In Ireland it’s Ro-sheen with equal stress on both syllables, in England it’s often pronounced RoSHEEN.

MikeUniformMike · 02/12/2019 17:57

Roisin seems dated but is pretty.
Fiadh is pretty but will be Fear or Thea so potentially a PITA.

Bored of the Eva type names.

Sadhbh is nice but will get mispronounced and misspelt.

agteacht · 02/12/2019 19:34

I quite like Fodhla and Liadh (even if latter possibly made up)

Might add Liadh to my list but still veering towards Roisin or Fiadh

Not really concerned if Roisin a little dated, is far less dated than some other names so can live with it. Also the ruh-sheen thing not the end of the world..

Will ask DH to pronounce them both a few times later and see what I hear!

39+4 so will let you know soon what I choose hopefully!
Though baby will likely now be a bit after 100+ posts about this 😂
Fionn still top of that list.

Oooooh Fiadh is my favourite name, unfortunately I hadn't heard of it when naming my DD and its probably too Irish for me to use but I did end up naming DD Fae which is close enough Halo

Go with Fiadh or even Fia, its lovely! Another thing that did put me off as an English person though is that it would sound a lot like "fear" with our accent :/

CloudyVanilla · 02/12/2019 19:44

Oh yes and I did also worry about people thinking we were mispronouncing Thea too!

Onesnowballshort · 02/12/2019 19:46

Have you changed your surname, OP? As if not why not give the child your surname and a first name that your dh can easily say!

agteacht · 02/12/2019 21:01

@CloudyVanilla Fae is a beautiful name!

@Onesnowballshort I haven't, no, but it's the first name we would like to be Irish and the baby will have his surname. DH can cope with these!! He has veto'd the hard ones like Caoimhe or Tadhg or Beibheann! And the rest of the world I hope will cope with this crazy decision 😉

What about Dara, OP? (For a girl)

It's easy peasy, no confusion Xmas Smile

Drbrowns · 02/12/2019 22:32

Fodhla is lovely, that’s my favourite out of all your choices apart from Caoimhe, but your Dh said no to that. I prefer Liadhan to Liadh. Roisin is nice but would pick Fiadh over it. Love Fionn for a boy, Donnacha another to throw out there for a boy. Also Ferdia. Would have loved that myself but was vetoed by dh.

mathanxiety · 03/12/2019 06:11

Bosco I was thinking that too about 'Aurnia'.

Grin
mathanxiety · 03/12/2019 06:16

Agree with MindyStClaire and PotteryWheel on pronunciation of -eann and -ann endings and what makes the long E sound.

mathanxiety · 03/12/2019 06:17

In the same vein as Edel, how about Dymphna?

MarleneandBoycie · 03/12/2019 06:20

Roisin is a very 70s/80s name. But Fiadh is lovely.
