Is the name likely to become more popular as a result of the BBC's production of His Dark Materials?

I don't mind the association with the book, but I would prefer that everyone doesn't think she is simply named after a TV character.

In a year or two, I doubt anyone will think of it. For now, while it's on TV, you might get a few people asking if that's why you chose the name, but you can just say no, you already liked it Smile

BertrandRussell · 11/11/2019 14:39

Sorry- they will!
I would choose something else.

Ginandgingers92 · 11/11/2019 14:40

I had this discussion with husband yesterday. It's a beautiful name but yes, I can foresee it getting really popular because of the series (which I'm loving, just to chuck in there) and in a few years there'll be a nursery full of them!

seven201 · 11/11/2019 14:45

I teach a secondary aged Lyra. I asked her if her parents liked the his dark materials books. She had no clue what I was on about until I mentioned the golden compass as she'd seen the film.

I do think it will get a lot more popular but you need to decide if that bothers you or not. I think the books are very well known, so I don't think you need worry much about people thinking you did it because of the tv.

I wanted to call dd Lyra but dh wasn't keen as she thought she was an annoying character in the film.

thisnamechanger · 11/11/2019 14:49

I think Michael Sheen called his baby Lyra, he narrated the audio-book of La Belle Sauvage and BOD - it's a lovely name!

Sandsnake · 11/11/2019 15:01

I love Lyra. But we’ve not included it on the shortlist for our upcoming DD, mostly because we’re concerned it’s going to be associated with the TV series. I like Arya too, but think that’s got at least ten years before it loses it’s GoT association!

kjhkj · 11/11/2019 15:04

I think people would already think it was due to His Dark Materials. The books are very very well known.

BertrandRussell · 11/11/2019 15:04

Well- there were no Lyras born in 1996, the year before the first book came out, and it’s been gaining in popularity since then. Still not very many- 362 in 2018. But it’s on an upward trajectory- and I can’t see that changing any time soon. And it’s obviously entirely Pullman related!

Winterdaysarehere · 11/11/2019 15:13

Too much like Myra and Lycra for my liking!!

MikeUniformMike · 11/11/2019 15:45

Not keen, sorry.
There are so many names that look or sound similar.
Lila, Lily, etc
Lara is much prettier.

diddlediddle · 11/11/2019 17:28

I really like it but it is already climbing quickly in popularity and will definitely get an extra boost from the tv series.

BonBon411 · 11/11/2019 17:58

It’s pretty.

NoSauce · 11/11/2019 19:21

Weak.

Lindy2 · 11/11/2019 19:27

I know a Lyra who is about 8. She is named after the character in the book.

It's a lovely name. I believe it means the brightest star.

I guess it will become more popular following the tv series but probably not massively so. The books have been popular for ages and the Golden Compass film has been around for years too without causing a huge surge in popularity.

DoraNora · 11/11/2019 19:46

I absolutely love the name (always planned to call my DD Lyra) but there is only one reason anyone picks that name, and that is because they love His Dark Materials.

Omashu · 11/11/2019 19:49

I think it’s a bit marmite so I don’t think it’ll be overly popular like Ava or Isla etc...

Omashu · 11/11/2019 19:50

I really don’t like it... it’s a bit whingey and sounds like liar.

FriedasCarLoad · 11/11/2019 19:51

I’m afraid I didn’t know the name until those books became popular. I haven’t read them, but would assume you were fans - sorry!

NameChange30 · 11/11/2019 19:52

I've always liked the name (loved the books as a child) and I would use it even if it becomes more popular.

ilovetofu · 11/11/2019 19:57

Love it.

ilovetofu · 11/11/2019 19:59

And love the books so wouldn't worry about the association 🤷‍♀️

RolytheRhino · 11/11/2019 19:59

Lyra Lyra pants on fire.

No one would actually say it of course. But if I were naming a child that'd put me off. Might not do it for you though, and if not then go for it.

Oneforposy7 · 11/11/2019 19:59

The books have been out for years and there was a previous film adaptation that was huge at the time so I don't see why the BBC adaptation would change much. The obvious difference with game of thrones is they were daft made up names that couldn't have come from anywhere else. Lyra is a beautiful Greek name.

missmouse101 · 11/11/2019 20:03

Lyra looks like Lycra so no from me. Also really dislike some people's pronounciation of it as Leera. Awful. As a pp said, Lara is much nicer.

CountFosco · 11/11/2019 20:10

The books have been very popular for a long time, but the TV show will be on for the next 3 years (possibly longer if they then decide to do The Book of Dust trilogy) and that is likely to increase the popularity of the name further. I think long term the association will be with the book rather than the TV though.
