Rainier Boy’s Name

I love the name Ray but I’d like to give my baby a longer name. I’m not too sure about Raymond, so thinking of Rainier. Rainier has sentimental meaning as it’s the Mountain where I learned to ski. What do people think? Is it too unusual? Hard to say?

To you, it’s a beloved mountain full of fond vistas and memories. To him, it’s a lifetime of irritating weather-related jokes. Why turn something beautiful into that? Keep the memories, give him a normal name.

Not keen. There are three Raymonds in our village. One always gets Raymond. One always gets Ray and the third gets Raymond when he is in trouble with his partnerGrin

Pannalash · 05/11/2019 00:02

Prince Rainier of Monaco

Expressedways · 05/11/2019 00:02

Are you from the Pacific Northwest and if yes does the association with the beer not bother you? I sympathise as I suggested naming DD after where I learned to ski (Meribel) but thankfully someone we know chose it for their dog first and that brought me to my senses. I blame the hormones! If you’re in Europe and there’s another Mount Rainier I haven’t heard of then it’s a bit Monaco and I’m still not keen (sorry).

DramaAlpaca · 05/11/2019 00:02

Honestly, I'd just call him Ray, but I like short names.

I know a teenage Ray, he's a Raymond but he never gets called that. Ray really suits him.

littlejalapeno · 05/11/2019 00:27

Rainier wolfcastle on the Simpson’s. Could be fine, as long as your surname isn't McBain? Sorry.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 05/11/2019 07:48

I know a Rainer. It's the German version of the French Rainier.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 05/11/2019 08:02

Love itSmile

seavas · 05/11/2019 08:20

I guess that’s where the pronunciation thing comes in. If you know the Mountain you say “Rain - ear” and the weather doesn’t come into it. But you make a good point. I think I’ve been solidly put off by most people’s reactions.

But the German Rainer is pronounced more like Reyener giving so wouldn’t work @pippilangstumpfi

Just go with Ray if you like it

Cookit · 05/11/2019 09:11

I was going to say I know the name Rainer but not Rainier and I see Pippi has mentioned that one too.

I like Rainer.

EleanorShellstrop100 · 05/11/2019 14:48

I’d just go for Ray.

theatrenerd31 · 05/11/2019 14:51

I knew a female Raenier growing up, went by Rae. She didn't seem to mind it and nobody took the mick. Not my taste, but it never seemed that weird

badg3r · 05/11/2019 20:05

How about Raife?

17caterpillars1mouse · 05/11/2019 20:47

I know a 4 year old Ray, not short for anything. It's a nice name

diddlediddle · 05/11/2019 22:18

Rainer is nicer, I like that.

Raife not a bad suggestion.

seavas · 05/11/2019 23:16

Sorry I don’t like Raife at all. But thanks for all the suggestions. I think it’s back to the baby name generator for me!

Ellmau · 07/11/2019 21:31

Raylan as in Justified? It's a bit American but that may not be a problem for you.

Raeburn?

PlasticPatty · 07/11/2019 21:35

I taught a Ranier. Never heard anyone take the piss.
Raife is awful..
