I am pregnant with twin girls. I really love Greek mythology and drawn to greek mythology goddess, nymphs and muses names. I have a list of some I like, but looking for opinions, feedback or others that you like.

Arethusa(ar-uh-thoo-zuh)
Xanthe (zan-thee)
Eos (ee-aw-s) I think I'd like this one as a middle name.
Gaia (guy - yA)
Ianthe(ee-an-thee)
Selene (suh-leh'-nee) I think I'd like this one as a middle name.

Xanthe and gaia but would be lovely!! But maybe not with Greek mythology middle names, might be a bit too much. Athena is lovely too

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 01/11/2019 14:28

Demeter
Athena
Danae
Gaia

These are my favourites

EssentialHummus · 01/11/2019 14:29

Hmm. I’d go for Iris, Phaedra, Xanthe, Daphne - some on your shortlist are too out there imo.

EssentialHummus · 01/11/2019 14:30

Gaia is lovely too.

mythologygirl · 01/11/2019 16:31

Xanthe Dawn I agree now does sound better, even though I do adore Eos.

Was going to such Ariadne (Grin) - but you've already decided

joffreyscoffees · 04/11/2019 01:09

Thea is also a Greek mythology name .. and my DD's.

I love Xanthe too.

I don’t know to what extent you are interested in this but it might be worth noting that Xanthe is pronounced Ksanthe by Greeks while British people tend to go for Zanthe. Also the Ancient Greek version has the accent in the first syllable, but in modern Greek that is the pronunciation of a town, the name tends to have the accent on the last syllable. So calling her Xànthe instead of Xanthè would be a bit weird to a Greek person.

Eos is also the Ancient Greek version, the modern Greek is Eo, both pronouncing the E like ear or ear or Eeyore and not like elephant (sorry, my phonics are crap). Greek names are conjugable so Eos means belonging to Eo, so Eo’s car would be the car of Eos in Greek.

Of course you can pronounce them as you like but I do think there is something odd about using an unusual name from another culture and pronouncing it in a different way.

mythologygirl · 04/11/2019 13:36

Great info, but I like the anciet greek pronouncations.

I love Greek names, my 4 year old daughter is called Isadora Cassie which is Greek, Cassia is a beautiful Greek name too

@mythologygirl a bit late to this thread but found it as I was searching for unusual names for my first DC. Me and my sister have two of the more unusual girls names on here. In younger childhood I did love the names like Zoe/Chloe etc but that's because they were synonymous with American TV and popular girls. We have really grown to love our names now and the fact no one else in the area has them. For what it's worth, my sister has quite a creative job so quite out there but I work in Childrens Services. Never had any issues with names and only daft people can't seem to spell them tbh. However a lot of people would say we do 'suit' our namesak

GalaxyGirl24 · 06/02/2020 21:17

*edit: when I say daft, I mean people who seem to want to anglicise every name and give us mundane nicknames or 'more English sounding' names. This may be because we are mixed race however, and I know this happens quite a lot with people of colour/diff ethnicities where names are shortened to versions that you wouldn't choose for yourself but are 'easier' for people.

QueenOfCatan · 06/02/2020 21:23

I love goddess names, my eldest has a Greek one and youngest has a roman one. Xanthe, Iris, Calliope and Athena were all favourites of mine for dd2. I have an Artemis, a few people have called her Artemus (my mother mostly FFS) but very few get it wrong. My first name is quite simple and I get asked it's spelling constantly, and my surname spelling, not the end of the world.

goldenorbspider · 06/02/2020 21:25

Got to be Persephone the dress queen!

What about calypso or calliope?
Hecate? The people's goddess

goldenorbspider · 06/02/2020 21:25

Dread*

DjMomo · 06/02/2020 21:25

And you are middle class right?

Nyssia · 06/02/2020 21:35

Xanthe Eos and Nyssia ???

Obviously I like Nyssia

AlpacaGoodnight · 06/02/2020 21:41

Both my daughters have Greek names, 1 mentioned on this thread and another not (yet!). No one has had any issues pronouncing them and I have had a lot of love for them in real life. My eldest LOVES her name and my youngest is too young to have an opinion yet! I also know a couple Xanthe's, a Gaia and a Selene non of which have ever caused any confusion or negative comments in real life!

ladycarlotta · 07/02/2020 15:35

Xanthe and Eos, how nice! I was coming in to suggest Hero to go with Xanthe. I've met a few Xanthes and a Xenia (also nice!).

Bezalelle · 08/02/2020 10:14

Oenone (goddess of wine)
Taygete (pronounced Ta-yi-jit-ee - one of the Pleiades)
