Baby Boy Name Dilemma??

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice ...

I am expecting a baby boy and absolutely love the name Mac as my maiden name is a Mac surname and it reminds me of my Scottish roots. My dilemma is ... I have a nephew called Max. Is it too similar??
The boys live on the other side of the world from each other so (unfortunately) won’t grow up together. It’s my all time favourite but this is making me doubt it.

What do you all think?

I think it’s fine and a lovely nod to your maiden name. What do you think Max’s parents will think? I know some are funny about stuff like this but it doesn’t sound from what you describe that it will cause much confusion.

Thanks so much for your response @naomimi
I think they would be ok about it actually ... it’s more extended family members and family friends that may ‘comment’ on it... but I guess I shouldn’t really care about what others have to say.
Thanks again

I think it’s great and it doesn’t really matter if his cousins name is similar.
What about using the whole surname though?

EugeniaGrace · 31/10/2019 02:01

Would you consider using Cormac, Macsen or the whole surname as a full name and abbreviating to Mac?

Jossina · 31/10/2019 04:21

Try a name where Mac is the nickname.

Maisymoo0000 · 31/10/2019 06:07

Thanks ladies,
I do like Macsen but sounds even more like Max than Mac I think 😂
I couldn’t find any names that jumped out at me when I was looking for Mac as a nickname but I’ll perhaps go back and have another look.
Glad to hear it’s not too much of a no-go!

Mac is a great name and it has special meaning to you.

His cousin being Max is no problem imo

Lavenderblues · 31/10/2019 08:10

I think a Mac is great. But don't like Macsen as it sounds like Maxen or Maxin.

AfterSomeAdvice1234 · 31/10/2019 08:29

Mac is great! Agree with PP, could you use your maiden name as the full name and Mac as the NN? Otherwise I went to school with a Marcus who was called Mac for short if that helps

wineymummy · 31/10/2019 08:32

I don't think there's anything wrong with it per say...but I can see confusion with people trying to say "Mac's" eg. Mac's birthday. But really it's a fairly small inconvenience for your son having that name for a lifetime. I agree that a longer name could make it easier though, just for those incidences, being able to say "Macsen's" instead of "Mac's."

MikeUniformMike · 31/10/2019 08:38

Macsen is Welsh and although it is a great name it seems a bit naff if you are not Welsh.
You could use your Maiden name as a first name, if it is one that sounds OK and shorten it to Mac.
I have heard of men whose surnames are MacSomething using Mac as a nn. e.g. John Macmillan being Mac Macmillan to his mates.
You could have something like John Macmillan Smith nn Mac, Macmillan Smith nn Mac or just Mac Smith.
It depends on your surname - most people go through life known as Firstname Surname.

BelfastmummyL · 31/10/2019 09:14

I think Mac is fine with a cousin Max. I agree with calling it a longer name first and shortening to mac. Eg Mackenzie Maccarter or Maccauley

MissHenty · 31/10/2019 10:06

Mac is great and no problem about Max

Lavenderblues · 31/10/2019 10:11

I don't see any problem. Mac is a great name and saying Mac's book is clearly different to saying Max's book! Go for it.

Maisymoo0000 · 31/10/2019 11:31

Thank you all so much! You’ve made me feel so much better about it!!
