Caitlin

MindyStClaire · 27/10/2019 21:21

Caitlín is an Irish name pronounced Cotchleen or Coytchleen.

I know the battle has been lost, but I hate it pronounced Kate Lynn.

So if that's the pronunciation you prefer I vote Catelyn.

Tashalburrows · 27/10/2019 21:27

I'm biased as it's my dd name. But I spell it Caitlyn.

Astronica · 28/10/2019 00:37

I like Caitlin spelling best and it works fine with the surname.

Fairybobbin · 28/10/2019 01:34

Catelyn

Or Caitlyn would be a bit more classic

SquigglePigs · 28/10/2019 01:50

I love it. It was on our short list for DD. I favoured the Caitlin spelling and DH favoured Caitlyn but I think either works. I'm less sure about Catelyn to be honest though.

Tavannach · 28/10/2019 01:55

Caitlin.
Or Csitlyn, but not Catelyn.

Jossina · 28/10/2019 03:43

Caitlin

LadyB49 · 28/10/2019 04:07

Caitlin...... I think any other spelling of it looks tacky.

Lavenderblues · 28/10/2019 07:14

Caitlyn or Catelyn

Is the general consensus that it’s a nice name? My husband loves it but there is something niggling at me about it and I’m not sure what.

MrsBertBibby · 28/10/2019 08:21

It's OK but a bit bland imo (sorry tashal).

Clangus00 · 28/10/2019 09:54

It’s meh to me.
Seen too many “all American” blondes with that name. Not one I would choose.

Lllot5 · 28/10/2019 09:57

There was a child with this name where we used to live. She was a horrible spoilt brat. It’s put me off the name tbh.
I’m sure yours won’t be but it’s spoilt a really nice name for me

Crystal87 · 28/10/2019 10:03

I love it, it's the middle name of one of my DDs but I wish I'd saved it for her sister's first name. I also used to know a 3 year old Caitlin Smith about 12 years ago, she was very bright.

TheRobinIsBobbingAlong · 28/10/2019 10:10

My DD is Caitlin and we pronounce it KateLyn rather than the true Irish way. The only problem we had when she was growing up was with people who didn't know her well (think new teachers) not reading the name properly and calling her Catlin. I think you're just as likely to have it pronounced Cat-Lyn (or even Cat-e-Lyn) if you spell it the Catelyn way with a 'C' as some people will focus on the first three letters.

Lavenderblues · 28/10/2019 14:27

I don't really like it (as you asked)

Tensixtysix · 28/10/2019 14:32

Caitlin. It's going to be very annoying for ever with any other spelling.

AgeLikeWine · 28/10/2019 14:35

Caitlin is lovely, but if you do choose to use a traditional Irish name, you should use the correct Irish spelling.

spice3 · 28/10/2019 14:36

I know a Caitlin, a Caitlyn and a Kaitlin.

I'd say it's a bit outdated and I'd be shocked to hear it on a baby - the youngest one I know of is 14 but there was about 7 in my school year group (20 now). I feel like that was it's peak.

It's not the worst name, just a bit meh now.

123Dancewithme · 28/10/2019 14:51

I read that it has decreased a lot in popularity recently because of Caitlyn Jenner.

devilishlygood · 28/10/2019 15:22

It’s not for me. The Jenner thing...I’m just instantly put off by any name related to reality tv, which just is a bit unreasonable, and has caused me to abandon some beautiful names...

In addition, to me, Caitlin has just become a bit All American, blonde popsicle in my locality and it’s not for me. Shame, because it’s Irish heritage used to have me all ‘feisty, feminist bad ass’.

bridgetreilly · 28/10/2019 18:21

I like it and would pronounce it Kate-lynn, though you're also likely to get Catlin, Cat-leen and Cotchleen, so if that would annoy you, think again.
