Scandinavian theme as scandi heritage /surname and ds1 has scandi name!

Feel free to say it's not your thing but be gentle please as actually quite keen on this one!

Matilda

Had Freja for ages, and that's still on the list... But it's just so common and Matilda sounds lovely with ds1

Thoughts please!

I love it, and I also love it shortened to Tilly.

MissHenty · 24/10/2019 17:19

Absolutely love Matilda
One of my very favourite names

Like Freya too but prefer Matilda

DramaAlpaca · 24/10/2019 17:21

Love it.

Matilda was No.31 in the ONS chart the last release in October. Freya was No.18 (Freja is number 1436). They're both very popular currently so go with the one you like the best.

It's a beautiful name but if the popularity of Freja puts you off I think you're mistaken on Matilda's 'unpopularity' so time speak.

MarshaBradyo · 24/10/2019 17:46

Much prefer Freja with that spelling

bridgetreilly · 24/10/2019 17:47

They're both nice, though Freja with that spelling is by far the least common in the UK. Freya and Matilda are both pretty popular.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/10/2019 17:47

Love it,
Becoming quite popular though if you are concerned about that

codenameduchess · 24/10/2019 18:01

Matilda is pretty common if that's what put you off Freja. It's a pretty name (I'll always associate it with the book/film) and can be shortened if you or she wants to. It's also Germanic in origin rather than Scandinavian- but very popular in Scandinavian countries.

whether you spell it Freja or Freya it's pronounced the same so it makes little difference re popularity.

Either are lovely choices, go with whatever you love 🙂

Duggeeismysaviour · 24/10/2019 20:45

Thank you all!

I guess I meant RE Freja, it's (where I live) currently a more 'fashionable' choice, though I get both are equally popular.

Now we just have to hope it's a girl :)

My dd is friends with four Matildas, all shortened to Tilly. It’s a nice enough name I suppose, but it’s so common now it doesn’t even register any more. They are all known as Tilly X or Tilly blah blah’s sister.

Like for my generation, you’d never think ‘oh, Sarah, what a pretty name’, you just think ‘Sarah, which one?’. Matilda is that name now.

CravingCheese · 25/10/2019 12:35

Matilda doesn't register as 'scandi' to me.
I guess it's just so popular in various (non scandi) countries... 🤷🏻‍♀️
But I really like it! It's a super pretty name :)

Freja is lovely. I'm just wondering whether it would lead to a lifetime of 'Freya with a j'? But it is a lovely name.

TempsPerdu · 25/10/2019 14:46

Matilda is very pretty. But it doesn’t give me a particularly Scandi vibe, and it is very popular now - I have an almost 2 year old and there are many more Matildas than Freja/Freyas among her peers.

missmouse101 · 25/10/2019 14:49

Sounds very dated and frumpy to me, like Doris and Gladys.
