Girl’s names

Hi everyone!

We are pretty sorted for boys’ names but struggling a little for girls’ names. Surname is double barrelled T-K and we already have Noah and Louis brothers.

Just wondering what people’s preferences are from the below. Total coincidence so many are A...a! Middle name will be Annette as family name both sides. (Weirdly it seems we like names starting with A)

Arabella - love it but so long and don’t like Bella (can be Ari or Ara though)
Ariana - too much association with the singer?
Amara - means ‘bitter’ in Italian and I have a couple of Italian friends which isn’t a dealbreaker
Arwen - love it but ‘made up’ by Tolkien and hadn’t realised its from lord of the rings
Liliana - long and would have to be Lil as don’t like Lily and we know a Lila already.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

What about Ariella? Similar to Arabella but looses the Bella bit you’re less keen on

LTK73 · 24/10/2019 08:03

Dino - good suggestion, thank you!

How about Aria?

I really like Arabella and Amara though

NoSauce · 24/10/2019 08:27

Annabel?

I adore Amara. Arabella is nice but not keen on the others.

Florence
Isabella
Lucia
Madeleine
Carlotta
Henrietta
Penelope

Alana?

Mintypea5 · 24/10/2019 08:44

Arianwen instead of Arwen it means silver in welsh

Milicentbystander72 · 24/10/2019 08:59

Eira? (Snow in Welsh)

Anwen?

I know an Arabella, people do called her Bella often but she's known at school as Arabella. I think people just follow your lead.

MikeUniformMike · 24/10/2019 09:04

Arabella - fine but long, lots of El, Ella names popular now. Will be shortened.
Ariana - too long. Arry-AH-na or Arry-Anna.
Amara - no, too nothingy
Arwen - not keen
Liliana - no. too long, don't like Lil. Lily is nicer.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 24/10/2019 09:53

I love, love, love Arwen! I've read that whilst used by Tolkien, he didn't invent it and it is not made up and it is a very old traditional Welsh name meaning fair or white (just paraphrasing no expert on Welsh) and the male equivalent is Arwyn.

However regardless it is still associated with Tolkien but (shrug) People are using Hermiones, Khaleesi, Sansa.....at least Arwen is classic.

Alternatives:

Eowyn
Olwen
Aria
Ariadne
Aurelia
Adriana
Bronwen

Thanks for all your thoughts!
@MissHenty like Aria - thank you
@NoSauce problem is niece is Annie so a little too similar
@subwaysaladfan doesn’t have the same pull for me. Thanks for the suggestion though
@Mintypea5 a little too much of a mouthful but thanks for suggesting!
@Milicentbystander72 those are good. I also like Niamh but was a little unsure whether as a non Irish person it would be a little weird! Thanks
@catherineofaragon yes apparently derived from Arwyn. My 5yo thinks Arwen sounds like a boy’s name so that’s interesting. OH suggested Ariadne funnily enough but i just don’t feel it as much. Really like Arwen though! Thanks for all the suggestions

@LTK73 absolutely gorgeous names. Love both.

Cotswoldmama · 24/10/2019 11:43

My sons got an Amora in his class a bit like Amara but means love and a bit more unusual

LTK73 · 24/10/2019 18:21

Thank you @MissHenty - only frustrating that people always call Louis Lewis when they read his name

MissHenty · 24/10/2019 18:30

I think they’ll stop that soon OP. Especially now it’s a member of royal family name. Very strange they’d do that anyway really. I have never seen anyone confuse the names and I have a louis in my family

Samosaurus · 24/10/2019 21:10

I know an Arwen in her 30s, it really suits her and is a lovely name :)

LTK73 · 24/10/2019 22:22

@Cotswoldmama thanks!
@MissHenty I KNOW! So strange.
@Samosaurus thank you! Good to know :)

Arwen is lovely! A friend's little girl is called Arwen Grace! Very pretty and i think it sounds timeless!

Astronica · 25/10/2019 05:18

Arwen is my strong favourite of those. All names start somewhere so I'm not sure why coming from Tolkien would be a problem.

LTK73 · 25/10/2019 07:21

@coffeekisses21 and @Astronica thanks! You’re right. Every name starts somewhere. My sister is Wendy which of course is Peter Pan made up!

Arabella - I like it. But wouldn't recommend it in your case (seeing as you dislike the nn Bella)
Ariana - I personally don't think so, no.
Amara - it sounds a but evil to me tbh.
Arwen - hm. Idk. It is nice.... But it is very very LOTR.
Liliana - Liliana is nice. But you can't really influence what her friends are going to call her....

I really like your boy's names, btw. Especially Louis.

Suggestions / in my opinion similar names:
Adriana, Araminta, Andreana, Aminta, Rosalie, Rosalia, Amanda, Angelica, Eleanor, Eliana, Tatiana.

Arielle/Ariella is lovely.

LTK73 · 25/10/2019 11:48

@CravingCheese thank you - some good suggestions. I especially really like rosalie. We have an acquaintance who named her daughter that so not sure if OH would go for it but I’m going to suggest again. Like Eliana too. Cheers!
