Love it

hungryhippie · 23/10/2019 21:00

I think it's really cute Smile

DramaAlpaca · 23/10/2019 21:04

The problem with Betsy is that it's 'cute'. It might be adorable on a toddler, but it's twee & babyish on an adult woman.

elephantoverthehill · 23/10/2019 22:13

I don't think Betsy Clarke who my Betsy is named after is at all cute. She penned cute images but was quite strident. The other Betsy, .in my life, was best friend's Yorkshire terrier.

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/10/2019 22:17

No, it's cute and silly, except not that cute.
You're naming a person, not a kitten.

hellotabitha · 23/10/2019 22:19

Love it!

highheelsandwitcheshats · 23/10/2019 22:20

I like it. There's a family that swim at the same time as my DC. They have Elsie, Betsy and Olive and I think they are gorgeous names.

FriedasCarLoad · 23/10/2019 22:20

Love it as a NN for Elizabeth.

Not keen on NN-type names on the birth certificate.

Fookadook · 24/10/2019 18:35

Too cutesy and a bit bleurgh. Fine for a cow.

LeftoverPizza · 24/10/2019 18:38

I like it

Jossina · 25/10/2019 04:16

Great as a nickname.

RuthW · 25/10/2019 17:41

Elizabeth is lovely shortened to Betsy. My dog is called Betsy.

BelfastmummyL · 26/10/2019 21:24

I have a friend who's daughter is Called Besty but full name Bethany. She also gets Betty or Bette on occasion. I like Bette.
I think its a much Better option to give. A child a 'proper' name then shorten it as it gives them options in the future.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 26/10/2019 22:00

I'm about 50% sure it's the name of Denise Van Outen's daughter, which automatically puts me off as I have an irrational dislike of her.

KitchenDancefloor · 26/10/2019 22:11

Makes me think of a 60 year old American mom who is into crafting. Someone who loves an apron and Tupperware. No idea why.

Oct18mummy · 26/10/2019 22:23

I don’t like it. Shout it out as you will be doing that a lot - how does it sound? Can you see it as a name that will grow as she grows from a child into a woman.

SaharaSunset · 26/10/2019 22:42

I love it

I know two Besty's - one who is solely a Besty and the other a Bethan - both under the age of 5

Krazynights34 · 26/10/2019 22:48

No. Horrible aunt with same name. Betty, yes!

FrownPrincess · 26/10/2019 22:48

I had a beautiful black guinea pig called Betsy, sister to Topsy. Not a great name for an animal, fine for a small girl but far too cutesy for a grown woman.

Elizabeth is a great, strong name that offers so many possibilities for shortening, from the twee (Betsy) to the strong (Eliza, Bess) and all the ones in between (Betty, Lisa, Liz, Lizzie, Beth).

inwood · 26/10/2019 22:49

Love it. I know two, both mid 40s, probably due a resurgence!

ConfusedAndStressed95 · 26/10/2019 23:02

I'm Elizabeth and get Betsy, Bessie and Bunty from my family and friends. I've never had any issue with it as a name and as far as I'm aware no one thinks I'm particularly twee or cutesy. Go for it if you like it.

OooErMissus · 27/10/2019 00:45

Probably because you're Elizabeth, not actually Betsy....

yoursworried · 27/10/2019 01:06

I love it! I wanted to use it for DC2 but alas he was a boy 😁

yoursworried · 27/10/2019 01:07

PS I know an adult Betsy in her 30s - suits her just fine.

ConfusedAndStressed95 · 27/10/2019 01:18

@OooErMissus, I'm Elizabeth on paper and at the bank, all through school, uni etc I've been down as Betsy. So as far as most people know I'm not Elizabeth, it feels foreign to be called that. A name is a name, you aren't shaped by your name, your upbringing and personality is often more than enough to get rid of any preconceived notions about it.
