Asking for lovely SIL who’s feeling too poorly to come onto MN/online.

I am also a fan of India. There’s always a lot of attempting to ‘shame’ potential users of the name into some weird sense of cultural appropriation, but it’s still a legitimate name. It’s letters making up a lovely sound! Your SIL shouldn’t feel she has to explain her choice to anyone. At all!

India is the only name I like on the list

@coffeeforone India has been used as a name for decades. Indie is a cutesy nickname for a child called India/Indigo or short for a genre of music, a newspaper or type of school.

Love India or Indigo both cool hippy names and Indie is a cute nn.

Also like Olivia and Isla but they are way too popular at the mo.

Juliet is a bit 1980s for me and I really don’t like Jules. Juno is a possible funky alternative?

Maya is ok but will always get mispronounced. Myla is a cute/interesting alternative?

India is lovely, go for it.

Love India, and Indie is cute as a nickname.

Not India- its association with the colonial British Raj and posh girls make it a no-go. It makes me cringe. Juliet is my favourite.

Olivia and Juliet. Both sound more pleasant than the others and aren't too popular. I know Olivia actually is, but all the Olivias I know are in their early 20s.

Love India - it's our top girls name at the moment. We have no links to the country and don't think that would be an issue either way.

Juliet or Olivia are lovely. Of course Olivia has been very popular for years now though, if that bothers them.

Dislike India as a girls' name, and Isla is a bit dull and extremely common right now.

Maya would be lovely if your SIL were pronouncing it correctly, to rhyme with fire. If her partner is half-Indian, he would know that that is the pronunciation they use?

Overall I'd probably say Juliet, classy and a bit more unusual than her other choices.

What about Indie?

Not exactly what you’re asking but I would steer clear of using India and Juliet together as first and middle name. Both are in the military phonetic alphabet (same as Alpha for A, Bravo for B, Charlie for C, etc) and so it will seem an odd combination to have both in the one name.

agree with daisy, India is a colonial name hence Earl Mountbattens granddaughter and the posh girls" connotation.
