Paloma or Vivienne?

We've narrowed it down to these final two, they are quite different styles but I'm pretty sure I would be happy with either.

The lack of a nice shortened version of Paloma is an issue for me. However I think it probably is more in keeping with older sibling Saskia. Thx for your help!

I prefer Vivienne.

I'm really sorry but when I hear Paloma I for some reason think Papilloma. I don't know why it just jumps into my head.

Love Vivi / Vivienne

TheCraicDealer · 23/10/2019 12:31

I loooooove Paloma! It and Farah are on my dream baby name list, but they're a bit too glam for us personally to carry off. Pom/Pompom is an amazing nickname. So many girls names end in -a that the Saskia/Paloma thing wouldn't bother me.

Vivienne is having a bit of a moment with Angelina Jolie and whatnot which would put me off a bit tbh. I think she would 100% get Viv at school/work and you'd have to make your peace with that.

isayhitocats · 23/10/2019 13:01

I love Vivienne with Vivi as the nickname

averythinline · 23/10/2019 14:24

Vivienne... but prefer the vivien Leigh spelling very glam..not so keen on paloma ok not great as dc would say!

Cornflakesncake · 23/10/2019 14:25

Not keen on either, sorry

NoSauce · 23/10/2019 17:48

Do you think it's almost certain that Vivienne would become Viv? That's something I'm hesitating over. I know you cannot control nicknames. Interesting that someone has benchmarked it with the more dowdy middle aged names like Pauline as I think of it as being much more glamorous than that (maybe swayed by angelina jolie)

I think there’s a good chance, yes. Viv to me is a 60 year old dinner lady.

daisypond · 23/10/2019 18:45

I don’t think Paloma goes with Saskia at all. Two names like that smack of “dressing up, fancy dress” names. On their own they’re OK. Vivienne is a bit more mainstream, because it’s French and more aligned with our naming culture. I think Vivien is much classier, though.

loutypips · 23/10/2019 18:49

I love Paloma. But I know someone with the name and she's such a lovely person.

Frith2013 · 23/10/2019 18:54

Paloma is fine.

Vivienne is the punk off the Young Ones or it sounds like vivisection.

ilovetofu · 23/10/2019 18:55

Love both of them op!

ilovetofu · 23/10/2019 18:56

Think I'm slightly preferring Paloma.
But then I love Vivi 🤷🏻‍♀️

ilovetofu · 23/10/2019 18:58

It's NOT the punk off the young ones! @Frith2013 he's a man.

it's Vivienne Westwood or Vivien Leigh from Gone with the wind!

hairyheadphones · 23/10/2019 19:01

Much prefer Paloma, really lovely name.

missmouse101 · 23/10/2019 19:02

Paloma is great. Let the nn emerge naturally! Vivienne sounds like a 65 year old estate agent.

HappyAtWork · 24/10/2019 13:11

I don’t like it spelt Vivienne.

Much prefer the simpler Vivien and I think it goes better with Saskia also.

MissHenty · 24/10/2019 13:25

All the Viviennes I know of have become Viv @Camparisafari

I think if you continually called up school and things maybe there’s a way to stop that happening if you asked teachers to intervene if a child used that nickname? But ultimately your daughter might like Viv and won’t think of a dinner lady

WildCherryBlossom · 24/10/2019 14:25

Which one sounds best with your surname?

MissPepper8 · 24/10/2019 16:41

It's NOT the punk off the young ones! @Frith2013 he's a man

Haha it has immediately reminded me of him now 😂😂

I'm not keen on either sorry, however if I had to choose I would go with Paloma (pom/pompom is really cute). The thought with Vivienne is it would always get shortened to Viv and that would piss me off.
