Llewelyn, Llewellyn or Llywelyn?

Which is the most popular or “classic” spelling in Wales?

This is not for a baby, btw, and I won’t be saying slaughtering it aloud, so don’t worry!

Thank you Smile

Llewellyn.

Watto1 · 17/10/2019 21:37

I’d go for Llewellyn. All the Llewellyns I know spell it that way(Although they have it as a surname, not a first name if that makes a difference?). Having said that, I would pronounce it Llewelyn!

Naomimi · 17/10/2019 21:42

Thank you Smile It’s weird, isn’t it? Why is it usually spelt with the double ll in the middle but pronounced like a single l?

There are dropped sounds which weren't dropped many years ago.

I'm pretty sure 'llyfyrgell' was one but my Welsh language trivia is getting old now. Welsh word for library. I know I learnt some. I'm now questioning if I've spelt it right.

Llewellyn, yes.

Paintedmaypole · 17/10/2019 21:48

As a forename I thought Llewelyn was the most popular spelling, as in Llewelyn the great and Llewelyn Ap Gruffydd.

Because we like to be awkward!

Naomini,
The best spelling is Llywelyn. You can still use the nn Llew, which I love.
Llewellyn is horrible and pronounced Loo-ellen.

I don't get the reference to dropped sounds. There is no dropped sound in llyfrgell.

nespressowoo · 18/10/2019 09:07

Llewellyn. Lovely name

Proseccoinamug · 18/10/2019 17:56

Never seen it with ll in the middle. Llewelyn is the usual spelling ime. The ll in the middle looks wrong to me as a Welsh speaker. Llywelyn, I have seen as a surname.

Proseccoinamug · 18/10/2019 17:57

I don’t understand the llyfrgell thing either? Both ll sounds are a Welsh ‘ll’? There’s no single l sound?

MikeUniformMike · 18/10/2019 18:06

Llywelyn is the classic form.
Llywelyn ap Gruffudd etc.
Llewelyn is popular, probably because of the shortening to Llew

Llewellyn is an anglicised form and isn't Welsh.
