Longer Nicknames

Is it weird to have a short given name and then use a longer nickname. For example, given name is Anne but nicknamed and usually called Annie. Or Kate nicknamed Katie.

I named my daughter a short name with a slightly longer nickname, as in the examples above. We did this because I wanted her to have the choice of a more formal name when she is older, for example if she gets gets gets job and doesnt want to be known by a childish nickname.

Lots of family members seem to be confused by this. They dont understand why the nickname is longer, or are confused which is the given name and which is the nickname.

This isn't hugely unusual is it? I know if she had a long name with a short nickname, like Katherine shortened to Kate, people would have no trouble knowing which was which.

Where do you think the name Johnny came from? (FYI Johnny Depp was christened John) And Jamie?
I know a Rose who is known as Rosie. I think it’s fine.

Morado · 05/10/2019 08:43

My Mum is Anne but goes by Annie! I think it's fine...

Jellycat00 · 05/10/2019 08:47

It's absolutely fine! My best friend growing up was Jean, nn Jeanie.
How old is your dd? Your family will get used to it!

I have relatives called Ann. One is always Annie and the other Nancy or Nance. Perfectly fine.
I know a Kate who is always Kate but on her bc she is Katie. That's a bit more strange.

bridgetreilly · 05/10/2019 09:56

It's completely normal. People will get used to it.

Gummibaerchen1 · 05/10/2019 10:48

Maybe they feel that Kate is already a nickname for Katherine, so Katie would just be another nickname?

Lllot5 · 05/10/2019 10:51

In my experience people always alter names. If they can’t shorten them they make them longer. It’s fine it’s a term of endearment. Not sure you can control it either nicknames just stick sometimes.

Can't see an issue at all, it's nickname, not a short-name

I have a Lara who wants to be Larissa when she goes to secondary school (I know Lara is technically short for Larissa so that’s a bit backwards!!)

Astronica · 06/10/2019 03:11

Not a problem at all. Very normal in fact. The family will get used to it.

MissHenty · 06/10/2019 12:22

Yes it’s normal I know people who use kate and katie interchangeably . Same with Anne or Annie

Nailsfordays · 06/10/2019 13:56

It’s really common
