My friend is pregnant and she told me last night that she wants to call her son Keith after her uncle.

What do you think?

Nobody's business but hers.

It's OK. Old fashioned, and I wouldn't rave about it, but not bad.

Icantthinkofanewname87 · 02/10/2019 05:52

My friends son goes to nursery with a toddler called Keith and when she told us, the idea of a little baby Keith had us all in stitches. I even had a little chuckle again just writing this! It’s definitely not ready for a come back!

BethanyGilbert · 02/10/2019 06:29

I taught a 4 year old Keith about ten years ago who presumably was a baby at one point. It didn’t suit as a child and I doubt it suits as a teenager.

diddlediddle · 02/10/2019 07:49

It's fine isn't it. There's nothing wrong with Keith, in terms of letters it's no different to names like Kier, Leif, Faith, etc which are all fine. It's just connotations so those can change.

Usernamemcname · 02/10/2019 07:51

Sorry this has made me properly chuckle, will be laughing to myself all day about this.

FelicityFlutterby · 02/10/2019 08:05

I know an amazing Keith, so I'm a little biased.

I wouldn't use it on a baby, but I think it would make me smile if I met a baby Keith.

I met a toddler Richard recently and have met a few baby Peters too.

SaireyDog · 02/10/2019 08:23

It's beautiful 😜

AverageMummy · 02/10/2019 09:36

Unkind post

AverageMummy · 02/10/2019 09:36

You asked me what I thought

OhTheRoses · 02/10/2019 09:39

Most of the Keiths I know/knew are in their 60s now. They were all very nice and I prefer it to the Reggie/Stanley/Frankie genre. Julian, Jeremy, Tim must all be due a rerun.

Joeybee · 02/10/2019 09:43

If she likes it why not?! A lot of people will think it's dated - generally parents don't use names from their own or their parents generation...however that doesn't mean it's not a perfectly useable name. I think once people got used to the idea they'd just accept it.

FizzyGreenWater · 02/10/2019 12:13

It's probably coming back tbh.

Sounds ridiculous to the ears of those over 40 but that's the way the name cookie crumbles.

Without the connotations that it's an 'older' mans' name it's fine. Think Kiefer, it's not too far off it.

I think it will end up returning, Ralph certainly seems to and that's far more ridiculous to my ears!

Raphael34 · 02/10/2019 12:14

If someone asked me what I thought the worst name in the world was, I’d say Keith. Each to their own though

GaudyNight · 02/10/2019 12:16

I think it’s far preferable to the ubiquitous George.

PerfectPeony2 · 02/10/2019 12:16

Would absolutely love to meet a baby called Keith!

inwood · 02/10/2019 12:28

I met a pug puppy called Keith the other day and it made me think it was due a comeback. I don't think it will happen soon though but it will do. All names come around again at some point.

Paintedmaypole · 02/10/2019 12:40

Keith is actually a nice name but it has associations because it was used in the baby boomer generation who are getting on now but are too young to be romanticised. (Not dead yet and known personally).

GaudyNight · 02/10/2019 12:51

I know a wonderful silver fox Keith, but my main associations are Keith Richards, Keith Moon, Keith Haring, Keith Allen, Keith Floyd.

Superlooper · 02/10/2019 12:53

I know lots of Keith's, teenagers to 30s mostly. Wouldn't bat an eye

RobinsParasiticEye · 02/10/2019 13:03

It will be pronounced Keef. Not the good.

spiderlight · 02/10/2019 13:29

My DS is 12 and has a friend called Keith. My initial reaction was that he was probably named after a grandad, but it's just him now and he carries it off really well.

OhTheRoses · 02/10/2019 13:30

Perhaps in your world RobinsParasi'icEye

GaudyNight · 02/10/2019 13:31

Depends on where you live, @RobinsParasiticEye. The ‘th’ as ‘f’ thing fortunately doesn’t happen around here, or I’d be sending my seven year old to elocution classes.

ch3rrycola · 02/10/2019 13:32

I like it

ethelredonagoodday · 02/10/2019 13:33

When I was a child (am in 40s now) the thought of babies being called Stanley, Alfred and Wilfred seemed similarly ridiculous. It's all cyclical isn't it?! 🤷🏻‍♀️
