Names starting with the letter A seem to be popular

I was in a reception class and noticed a big display with all the children’s names, I was interested to see so many names starting with A. Out of 25 names there were 14 that started with A. Particularly girl names. Has anyone else noticed this or any other patterns?

Definately noticed this over the last few years. My nieces are both A and many of their friends are also. Not sure why but its definately increasingly popular

Both my children are A's not intentionally, we just really like names beginning with A it seems.

MontyDyson · 29/09/2019 05:26

One of mine begins with A and i love the name but not a girls name.

Dd’s Year 1 class used to be full of “S” girls - Sadie, Sarah, Sophie (*3!), Sophia and at least one other I have forgotten.

L seems to be most popular for my DD class.

  • for girls

Maybe they didn't get past the A names page in the book or online Grin
I loved a lot of A names for my daughter but in the end she doesn't have an A name.

userabcname · 29/09/2019 07:32

Yes! I love a lot of A names too.

BethanyGilbert · 29/09/2019 08:04

All the girls in my class this year have ie/y names. And most have a hyphen.

Verily1 · 29/09/2019 08:11

People buy a baby book and don’t get very far before choosing a name!

Girls names usually have more vowel sounds than boys names so a names become more thought of as ‘feminine’.
Ah is also a pleasing sound say compared to w or g.

2 of my 3 children start with A. My husband is Iranian and we had real difficulty choosing names, if I had a 4th we'd be totally stuck as there are literally no names left that we both liked!

I’ve noticed that E is popular: Evie, Eva, Esme, Elsie, Ella, Edie, Elliot, Ethan, Elijah, Edward, Ezra etc.

Minai · 29/09/2019 09:53

@123Dancewithme I agree, lots of E’s at the moment. 3 out of my mum’s 4 grandchildren are E’s!

So true with Es as well on my daughter's dance class I'd say 85% are A or E girl names then there is Isla, Olivia and a Sophie all popular names too!
