Rafferty/Raffy/Rafe

I love Rafe, and would like that as the full name ideally(I've never been one to stick a full name on a birth certificate and then just use a nn for the sake of it, but know that doesnt go down well here generally). I quite like Raffy, but not really a fan of Rafferty...

What about Raphael?

MustardScreams · 24/09/2019 08:37

My friend’s little boy is called Raffi and I absolutely love it. Do you need a longer version? I think it works well as a stand alone name. Strong and works from baby through to adulthood.

Raffy/Raffi with Rafe as the nn?

MustardScreams · 24/09/2019 08:38

Or the other way around. Either works.

Grufallosfriends · 24/09/2019 09:05

Rafferty is the obvious longer version. Raf reminds me of the RAF, don't like it as a name.

Astronica · 24/09/2019 09:06

I don't understand why you can't use Rafe as the name if you love it. It is a full name. It's been used as is since medieval times. I love it too.

Cuppa12345 · 24/09/2019 09:12

I think I can use it as the full name but just wanted to get other opinions on it first. Raffy as the NN for Rafe is quite sweet actually.

I think Rafe will work as a standalone name, it's quite a strong name for an adult. Raffy/Raffi Is OK for a child but don't think it translates to adulthood.

Cuppa12345 · 24/09/2019 09:31

Now to just convince the husband. He isn't keen! He thinks it's too modern and prefers James and William et al. I'll tell him it's a medieval name definitely!

Dislike Rafferty. It sounds like a comedy name to me.

thenightsky · 24/09/2019 10:33

I know two little girls called Raffey. I never knew it was also a boy name.

MissHenty · 24/09/2019 13:29

@Cuppa12345
R names for boys are very common now aren’t they
Reuben Rory Roman Rafe all merge into one for me.
I like James and William but they’re common too. Sorry not much help!

MissHenty · 24/09/2019 14:22
  • meant to add Ralph /Ralphie and Rafferty to that list of R names that all merge into one for me
MissHenty · 24/09/2019 14:56

How about Rudy/Rudi

That’s slightly more unusual sounding but is an old name

ShivD · 26/09/2019 15:42

I know a Raphael who is known as Raffy.

Raife is a name in its own right. It isn't shortened, but does need the i...

LadyOfTheFlowers · 26/09/2019 21:26

Rafferty. Raff. Raffy. I love the name Rafferty and all its shorts. Smile

LadyOfTheFlowers · 26/09/2019 21:27

Also love Rudi 👍🏻

Leah2005 · 26/09/2019 21:31

I thought Rafe was spelt Ralph?

Cuppa12345 · 26/09/2019 21:35

It's a different name and pronounced differently Leah

I love Raffy and Rafferty - and really wanted use it if we have a boy but my SIL has just used it for their puppy and now I don’t know if I can use it. It’s also put my DH Off using the name but it’s still my favourite if we have another boy (2 already) nothing else really stands out for Me so in a bit of a pickle If bump is a boy!

DottieLottie1 · 27/09/2019 06:49

In my handwriting the name Rafe is not great, I would avoid. Maybe looking into alternative spellings, it is a nice name though.

OP as a PP said Ralph can be pronounced Rafe aswell as R-al-th. Think of Ralph Fiennes....

Cuppa12345 · 27/09/2019 07:24

Ralph Fiennes, yes actually that's true. Ralph isn't R-al-th usually though, isn't it. Not a th but F on the end?

My friend has a dog Albie and then my other friend used it for her boy and it does make me think its a dogs name now just because the dog came first!

I love Rafe.
I do like a longer BC name personally so I'd probably use Rafael but Rafe is fine as a stand-alone.
