Do you ever see your unusual baby name?

Just that really - on unusual names threads, if you gave your DC an unusual name, do you ever see it?

I’ve only come across one of my DC’s names once (it was a complimentary comment!)

Ooh and also while I’m here - when you chose an unusual name, did you do so to be different (in the hope there wouldn’t be many) or because you just liked it because it was different? My three have very unusual names - I think they all hover around the 3500th mark - but we didn’t choose to be different. We just liked the names in their own right. That being said...there is a part of me that doesn’t want to share what they are, just in case Grin

Not yet!

Dc1, 2 & 3 have very common/popular names. Dc4 has a very unusual, possibly unique, first name as it’s never appeared on the lists of names (don’t there have to be 3 in one year?). It’s a family name that has been used as a middle name but possibly never as a first name.

PhannyMcNee · 22/09/2019 19:50

Oh and we chose it because we couldn’t agree on any ‘normal’ names but love this name!

VeganVeganVegan · 22/09/2019 19:52

On a worst names thread my second childs name was mentioned. I've personally never met anyone else with the name and I named him it because of a song which played when he was born.

BooseysMom · 22/09/2019 19:54

Good question! We chose a fairly popular name but it's spelt differently as it's Spanish origin so hoping he doesn't get angry with us when he keeps having to spell it out! But there's loads of names which have to be spelt anyway so it'll be fine

hooowl · 22/09/2019 19:55

Dc2 has a very uncommon name. It's occasionally mentioned on those huge lists people post with baby names suggestions but hardly anyone picks up on it specifically. I didn't really want to give dc2 such an unusual name but we really liked it and it suits them (dc1 has a very "normal" name).

There are one or that some ppl may know of but most ppl have never heard it before. However, there is a frequent MN poster with it as part of their username!

Windydaysuponus · 22/09/2019 19:56

Ds is 5 and never heard another dc called his name.

BooseysMom · 22/09/2019 19:57

Ooh sorry didn't answer your question properly! We chose it because we like it and not to be different. We have never seen it spelt the same anywhere, only the traditional spelling of it

OpiesOldLady · 22/09/2019 19:57

All four of my lot have unusual names and were chosen simply because we liked them.

The biys names and one of the girls names were broadly liked whilst my other daughters name was unanimously hated Grin

Leah2005 · 22/09/2019 20:01

Our son's name is unusual as a first name - more commonly used as a surname. I read a book where it was the author's surname when due to have him. Our original name choice had a massive rise in popularity due a TV program just before he was born so I went off it. I have only ever seen it embroidered on the paw of a bear made out of baby clothes since having him. It is however apparently a used name in the Netherlands.

Grufallosfriends · 22/09/2019 20:16

Our ds has a name that is only used about 20 times per year. It's well known and easy to spell and say, just not fashionable. We and he really like it!

We chose it simply because we liked it. Probably supported by the fact that it's not too common!

SumAndSubstance · 22/09/2019 20:46

DS1 has a very unusual name. The nickname gets the occasional mention on here (as a standalone name) but the name itself is only ever mentioned as a joke. We chose it because it's the name of a saint who is important to us. DS2 has a more common, but not very common, name which generally goes down okay on here. We chose it for the same reasons as DS1's name.

snop · 22/09/2019 21:25

No never seen anyone with did name, she hates her name I think it's lovely

Morado · 22/09/2019 22:17

I EXACTLY the same as you haha. I don't like sharing her name on here at all. I've never seen it mentioned on a thread. I picked it because I love it but also because it was rare. That's part of the big appeal to me!

I've noticed myself regretting telling people her name because I get paranoid that they'll steal it. Probably not healthy 😂

mrsed1987 · 22/09/2019 22:24

ive only met 2 others with my name, if that counts. It was annoying when i was a child and could never buy anything with my name on LOL

TerribleCustomerCervix · 22/09/2019 22:24

DD’s name is suggested occasionally on Irish girls’ name threads- we’ve only come across one other dc in the wild with the same name.

hooowl is your ds called Anyfucker Grin

moodyblues · 22/09/2019 22:29

My ds has a Spanish name and apparently I am a dick for naming him that because we have no Spanish connections (according to mumsnet).

It’s a fab name and he really suits it so fuck it.

Trenchcoated · 22/09/2019 22:50

I’ve never met another of DS’s name. I don’t think any others were born in his birth year in this country. Absolutely the fact that it was very unusual was a factor.

It gets mentioned very occasionally on here as being a ‘brave’, out there choice, which I thank is a bit mad.

gforg · 22/09/2019 23:04

Out of my 3 my eldests name is now 'popular' very annoying as the first few years of her life I'd never heard it. Bloody tv shows 🙄 my younger 2 I've never come across although my youngest is known just not used it seems xx

hooowl · 22/09/2019 23:21

hooowl is your ds called Anyfucker

Ahaha! Hmm not quite...
I really want to know all these names now... Will someone be brave?
I'm assuming sum has a Balonz...

Geekynzmum · 23/09/2019 06:20

We called our DD Lillian and have only ever come across 1 other with that name and she was our local librarian. I've seen her name come up once or twice on threads, but never anywhere else.
We chose her name as it was a compromise with names DH and I liked - Lillith for DH, and Lily for me though I would have spelt it Lillie. Grin
Another unusual name that I love and would have used if we'd had another DD is Cassandra. I think it's such a lovely name and can be shortened to Cassie. I met a little girl with the name when I was in my early 20s (friend's flatmate's DD), and have loved it ever since. I would dream of having 2 girls called Lillie and Cassie, I got my Lillie but sadly won't get my Cassie as we stopped after DD. Smile

BethanyGilbert · 23/09/2019 06:29

My daughters name is top 10 so we hear it all the time. My niece as far as we can find out is only the second child registered with that name in recent times with the last on being in the early norties. My sister is very protective of the name like PP mentioned!

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 23/09/2019 06:49

Both of my kids have fairly unusual names (800+ in the name stats for the years they were born). We chose them because they were the names we liked best, but I wanted them to have names outside the top 50-ish. I have a very popular name (classic and doesn’t date, but was the top girls name for the year I was born) and wanted my children to have something a little more unusual.

I see my daughter’s name mentioned on this board every now and again, but I don’t think I’ve seen my son’s name mentioned more than once or twice. Neither are names I hear called across parks/playgrounds.

Currently expecting DC3 and our girls name is more popular than we usually choose (it gets mentioned here a lot); our boys name is mentioned here sometimes but according to the stats isn’t used much.

tvdinnertracks · 23/09/2019 06:52

Never seen mine, dh or ds's name on here.

Ratbagratty · 23/09/2019 06:57

My 2 have unique names, 1 was 1 of 13 in her year's ons name survey, the other was less than 1 in her year.

They are based on something we both love and as they grow they seem to suit them more! They do have a sensible (!) Middle name should they prefer to use (I hope not!)
