(Marge: "You don't have a cousin Frank!" Homer: "He became Francine back in '76" -- The Simpsons, "Lisa's First Word")

It's a very American woman born in the 1960s name, I will admit, but has it got any staying power?

I quite like it.

elQuintoConyo · 09/09/2019 07:55

Isnt she in American Dad?
-ine names seem a little dated, imvho, quite 70s: Jacqueline, fir example.

Having said that, I love France, so a 'little France' Francine would be cool!

I'm torn!

ShallICompareTheeToASummersDay · 09/09/2019 07:57

Oooh I like it! Just make sure you’re on board with Fran/Frannie/Frank/Frankie.

RushianDisney · 09/09/2019 07:59

I also like it, Francine was the best character in Arthur Grin

user1493494961 · 09/09/2019 08:19

It's different without being ridiculous, although I don't watch American TV so have no idea how 'American' it is. It's a pretty name.

elliex1 · 09/09/2019 08:41

At first I was like NO but now im not opposed to it... wouldn’t use it but different. Love the Frankie nn too.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 09/09/2019 08:44

Ooh yeah. And IIRC there is a respected journalist called Francine Stock.

As a Scot who lived in England I’ve been a bit absurdly obsessed with “French” names and wanted to call DD1 “Marie- France” but I’d have been sectioned.

NameChange84 · 09/09/2019 08:47

I think it’s a nice, refreshing change. As a pp said it’s different without being out there. It’s nowhere near as dated as some of the current old lady names that are in fashion are (Olive, Edith, Ivy etc).

AverageMummy · 09/09/2019 08:48

Prefer Frances

HeadlessGummyBears · 09/09/2019 09:07

@RushianDisney Ooh I was thinking of the same character. And I can hear Muffy saying it in her annoying voice lol.

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/09/2019 09:09

I like it, for the same reason as @RushianDisney

Antonin · 09/09/2019 13:36

I’ve no strong feelings but it’s a nice name that I think would be acceptable and not dated. Not really ever been used enough to become ordinary and stale

AnneWeber · 10/09/2019 13:35

I like it. Apparently "ine" names are considered classy in France. I like Justine too. I'm not keen on the "een" ending. Maureen, Doreen etc

Pemba · 10/09/2019 14:50

Does still seem dated I think. I much prefer Frances or Francesca.

Outnumberedmumof4 · 10/09/2019 15:18

I like ‘ine’ names but I really don’t like Francine. Reminds me of Arthur too

Atlasta · 10/09/2019 15:19

No. Anything that can be nn Fran is awful.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 10/09/2019 18:12

Oh cheers @Atlasta

Hobbesmanc · 11/09/2019 16:22

Hmm- those ine or een endings seem dated- Francine, Maureen, Maxine, Janine, Doreen, Valene

daisypond · 11/09/2019 16:55

I like it. It was on my name list 20 years ago for my DD, but it was vetoed by DH.

daisypond · 11/09/2019 17:09

Meant to add, ended up as Frances as a middle name.

MikeUniformMike · 12/09/2019 13:52

It's quite nice. I like Claudine too.
