What are your thoughts on the name Liam? Not short for William, just Liam.

NoSauce what Confused just because I think teachers who judge kids by their given name are snobs

Sorry not all of us are elitist

Florrieboo · 09/09/2019 05:08

Not a fan and every Liam I know (I am Irish) is short for William. I found it quite funny when I met a family in Australia with a Liam and a William.

NoSauce · 09/09/2019 06:31

It’s nothing to do with being elitist. If a someone teaches children every year called “Ryan” or “Ben” or whatever who are naughty of course she’s going to have preconceptions about the name.

You are being weirdly defensive here.

MindyStClaire · 09/09/2019 06:47

All Irish boys' names are naughty boy names on MN.

DramaAlpaca · 09/09/2019 15:51

Indeed, MindyStClaire. Annoying, isn't it?

pooopypants · 09/09/2019 16:13

Oasis

That is all

NoodlesMcGee · 09/09/2019 18:16

Beautiful name, suits any age, and he's likely to be the only one in his class (not like the Ollie / Alfie / Jack brigade!).

NoSauce · 09/09/2019 19:06

All Irish boys' names are naughty boy names on MN

Which names?

MindyStClaire · 09/09/2019 21:29

Any mainstream Irish boys name gets that comment. Liam, Shane, Sean, Conor, Aidan. I'm sure there are plenty of others. Once you notice it you really notice it. Names that are basically the equivalent of James in Ireland get very different comments on here.

NoSauce · 09/09/2019 22:25

Shane, Sean and Conor are very dated. So I’m surprised anyone relates to them as naughty boys names.

AverageMummy · 11/09/2019 17:58

@Newday1 I think you’re incredibly sensitive about this. And I highly doubt you don’t make assumptions every day from tiny snippets of information about a person. If you were told you were meeting someone called Sharon you wouldn’t be looking out for a 20 year old man.

Frangible · 11/09/2019 21:49

Agreeing with @MindyStClaire and @DramaAlpaca that completely standard Irish boys’ names — the equivalent of Edward, Thomas, Thomas — attract incredible amounts of prejudice on Mn (and presumably, if this site is a barometer, in the country as a whole.)

devilishlygood · 14/09/2019 08:26

Liam is popular amongst the travelling community here. As is (generalised) tradition in travellers, I believe, the name is perpetuated by being named for relatives...named for dad or grandad or uncle etc.

We had a line of travellers called Liam start at my school in the ‘80s, they’d spent so much time jumping from school to school that they were probably insecure and thus pretty disruptive in class. It would probably have tainted opinions on the name.

Names aren’t a decider for behaviour, but some kids who are predisposed to less desirable behaviours (having parents who are obnoxious or antisocial, for example) might have similar names...at a stretch!! 🤷‍♀️

devilishlygood · 14/09/2019 08:27

It might, therefore, make sense that some Irish names, which are popular in travelling communities, would have similar grounds???

Frangible · 14/09/2019 18:04

Only among ridiculously prejudiced people. Whose prejudice somehow does not extend from demonising Traveller girls to demonising Irish girls' names as a whole, as Irish girls' names tend to be greeted with great enthusiasm on Mn...? Or are there no 'naughty girl' names? Hmm

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 14/09/2019 18:14

Ah, but only boys are naughty, didnt you know frangible? Wink

DramaAlpaca · 14/09/2019 18:16

No, it's only boys with Irish names that are naughty Wink

MissHenty · 14/09/2019 18:19

It’s a great name

No negative connotations here
