Henrik or Finn?

I have some Scandinavian background, but the surname is English. I wonder if we should go with Henrik or Finn? Which would you choose?

We have a Henrik, so I am biased but I love it ;-)

Be warned though. If you use it in the UK, it will get mis-spelt and mispronounced on a very regular basis.

diddlediddle · 06/09/2019 10:10

How the hell are people misspelling and mispronouncing Henrik?!

autumndreaming · 06/09/2019 10:12

Henrik! Makes me think of Henrik Ibsen

Frith2013 · 06/09/2019 10:14

My friend’s son is called Henrik. I’d chose that over Finn.

MaidofKent78 · 06/09/2019 10:20

Henry if they've misheard
Hendrick: we get that A LOTRY
Henrick

Ohflippineck · 06/09/2019 10:24

Henrik. Lots of Finns about. Be prepared though for a cross boy who can never find anything in gift shops with his uncommon name (mugs, key rings, room plaques etc.) I have 2, though they have enjoyed always being the only ones.

MaidofKent78 · 06/09/2019 10:24
  • A LOT
MissHenty · 06/09/2019 10:35

@shoobidoos

I see what you’re saying but Finn is at number 76 in the charts (817 babies)
Finlay is at number 156 in the charts (360 babies)
Finley is at number 30 in the charts (1900 babies)

Even totalling all those names....
It’s actually not that popular though I can well imagine there will be hot spots

A name like Oliver/Ollie/Olly - there are 6,000 babies each year. So even totalling all the Finn/Finlay/Finley etc etc it’s nowhere near the top spot

Well, I do think 3000 boys a year being called a variant of Finn is quite a lot Shock.

MissHenty · 06/09/2019 11:21

@shoobidoos yes it is a lot but it’s not close to the top 10 is all I mean

The way everyone’s talking on this thread I assume Finn plus it’s variations must be the number 1 name or something!

There are well over 3,000 Henry’s by the way. (Which I think Henrick might get confused for fairly regularly)

I’d go with Finn myself

MikeUniformMike · 06/09/2019 11:41

Henrik.
Finn is great but overpopular if you take Finley and Finlay into account.

aibutohavethisusername · 06/09/2019 12:17

Finn

MissHenty · 06/09/2019 12:46

@MikeUniformMike yes but if you see my stats (above) even with Finn Finlay Finley added together it’s still not as many as Henry (although I appreciate the name would be Henrick but it’s v similar)

MikeUniformMike · 06/09/2019 13:00

Henry is more of a classic, which generally means it will be less likely to date.
I'm of an age where Darren and Gary were popular. I still like them as names but they do seem middle aged.
My name was quite unusual - not unheard of - but is now popular.

I hadn't considered the Henry, Henrick etc confusion.
Finn's great but it is a bit of a bad boy name.

Friolero · 06/09/2019 13:02

Definitely Henrik - gorgeous name!

MaidofKent78 · 06/09/2019 13:20

Two perfect examples of misspellings right here!

EssentialHummus · 06/09/2019 13:54

Two perfect examples of misspellings right here!

You realise that other countries and languages have their own spelling and naming conventions, right?

Gummybearsy · 06/09/2019 14:33

Finn is boring (as well as a person from Finland 🇫🇮)

I'd choose Henrik from these two, but also like lots of the other Danish names.

Babynamegeek · 06/09/2019 15:57

@MikeUniformMike Finn/Finlay has been in the top 100 for over 20 years now so hardly a fad name. In fact, Finlay was a top 100 name in Victorian times (in Scotland) and Finn is a true classic is lots of Scandinavian countries and of course Ireland.

Gummybearsy · 06/09/2019 16:11

Well, I know at least 10 Finns aged 15 and below. And I don't know a single adult one. I do therefore feel it's a very 'trendy' name that will inevitably start to sound dated as it falls out of fashion eventually.

Henrik is much more classic imo.

MikeUniformMike · 06/09/2019 16:15

Which one sounds best with the surname?

Kiddofreddo80 · 06/09/2019 17:02

Henrik definitely! Strong name!
Finn is very wet to me and a bit boring

Enko · 06/09/2019 22:41

@MissHenty if you add those numbers together you get 3000 placing it at 14th right underneath Henry that has 3100.

OP I am Scandinavian myself I don't like either. Finn is an old mans name and always the dull guys and Henrik makes me think of the late prince consort of Denmark.

I mildly prefer Henrik over Finn mostly because in the UK Finn is just So popular

Sophronia · 08/09/2019 13:36

Henrik
