What are your thoughts on Olwen for a girl

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
bwydda · 01/09/2019 21:23

I have an auntie olwen. I don't know any young olwens but I do love it. Presumably you're in wales? Time for a come back?

AverageMummy · 01/09/2019 21:42

I’ve never heard of it & I did assume it was a boy’s name

StarlightCeleste · 01/09/2019 22:15

I feel it's a bit frumpy. I like Anwen or Bronwen much more.

saffy1234 · 01/09/2019 22:25

Do you like it?Thats all that matter really but for what its worth I absolutely love it xxxx

june2007 · 01/09/2019 22:33

A good trad welsh name if you like yes.

CTRLALTDELETED · 01/09/2019 22:35

I have an elderly Olwyn in my family. She’s amazing and I was going to make DC3 after her, but he was a boy. I’m complete biased but I think it’s a lovely, strong, unusual but not ‘yoonique’ name.

CTRLALTDELETED · 01/09/2019 22:35

Name, not make.

31RueCambon75001 · 01/09/2019 22:36

I love it! Only ever met one.

Metempsychosis · 01/09/2019 22:36

I like it - it is quite Welsh, so I wouldn’t go for it if I was 100% English, but it’s very easy for Anglophones to pronounce and spell.

31RueCambon75001 · 01/09/2019 22:38

I'm Irish and it was on my (long list). I felt entitled to use any name that was Welsh, Irish, English or Scottish. Or anything French, Italian, Spanish that was in common usage.

Surely if you're English you can use a Welsh name!

31RueCambon75001 · 01/09/2019 22:39

I thought Olwyn was for a girl. But that's a small point.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 01/09/2019 22:40

It's beautiful.

AlliKaneErikson · 02/09/2019 00:12

It’s pretty certain it is ‘wen’; ‘wyn’ is the male ending (if not, I’m sure someone will correct me). I had an old Auntie Olwen (Welsh, of course!) but don’t know any others.

aquarianaura · 02/09/2019 00:14

I had a great aunt Olwyn, I've always loved her name. Can't imagine it on anyone under the age of 60 though!

Astronica · 02/09/2019 04:52

I like it.

RuthW · 02/09/2019 07:07

I think it's a very ugly name. Sorry.

Windygate · 02/09/2019 07:57

Lovely classic Welsh name

NoSauce · 02/09/2019 08:34

Dreadful, sorry.

BlueEyedBengal · 02/09/2019 08:42

I'm welsh so love the name, but the import thing is not what other people think it's how you think and your choice.

BlueEyedBengal · 02/09/2019 08:43

By the way the female spelling is Olsen

BlueEyedBengal · 02/09/2019 08:44

O l w e n damed spell correct Blush

BingBongBay · 02/09/2019 08:47

-wen is the female suffix, -wyn is the male. Olwyn actually means wheel in Welsh, so is a pretty terrible mis-spelling of a name to lumber a child with!
I am 1st language Welsh, and Olwen is considered an old lady name, a bit like Mildred or Doris- but is making a comeback because of that trend of old fashioned names. I know three baby Olwens now.

Mamimawr · 02/09/2019 08:51

I know at least three little girls called Olwen, it seems to be much more popular than when I was in school / college. There was only one in school with me.
It's a nice name, I like it.

user1493494961 · 02/09/2019 09:20

Very dated. All the Olwen's I've heard of are either dead or 70+.

SilverySurfer · 02/09/2019 13:29

I thought Olwen was a boy's name. My DM was Olwyn which I think sounds better for a girl.
