MNHQ here: Which baby name tribe do you belong to?

AnnaCMumsnet · 29/08/2019 16:10

Hello, MNHQ here

Today the ONS have released their top baby names for 2018. (Spoiler: Oliver and Olivia both still hold the number one slots).

To coincide with the release we have been analysing our baby name boards and identified 13 baby name tribes - from the Tried, trusted, traditionalists (who prefer names like Oliver and Olivia, which top the ONS chart), to Classy classicists (Ptomely and Persephone) and Super moderns (Jaxon and Bear).

Then, using statistical textual analysis techniques, Mumsnet’s data science team analysed more than 4,000 threads and 170,000 posts to flesh out each tribe and uncover connections between them.

Like Ptomely? Then you might like Nigel. Like Bear? Then you might also be talking about Jeremy.

We've got lots more examples, including pretty graphics.

So which tribe do you fall into?

Divinely Inspired & Cautious Celt.

Would be good to see the diagrams for all the categories.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 29/08/2019 21:19

I’m not sure I’m represented here, I think my daughters would fall under the “posh names you’d give your daughters in the 1970s” tribe

steppemum · 29/08/2019 21:21

I don't fall into your sets.

Love some divinely inspired, dislike others intensely.
Love some Grandparent chic, can't bear others (Stanley is particularly awful)
Love one or two of the flowers names, find others unbearable twee.

The group I fall into is this:

  1. must be a real name (I'm definitely not a modern)
  2. must not be in top 100
  3. Must have normal spelling
  4. Must not be boringly obvious - like George

So vaguely traditional but only unusual will do.

By the way, how did Peaches get into the Royals group????

Winecheesesleep · 29/08/2019 21:24

Royal Babies for me Smile

steppemum · 29/08/2019 21:25

wait a minute

flower power includes

Elizabeth, Grace, Mabel, Alice, Beatrice???? Why?

MrsReader · 29/08/2019 21:30

None of the ones in the article, so I'll make up my own- girly and frilly

CatherineVelindre · 29/08/2019 21:30

My DC's names don't fit anywhere into those lists.

I'd characterise them as:

Taken from Nature
Rarely Used Regional Historical

Based on responses on this board when posters ask for opinions on my children's names, other people would characterise them as:

Actually a Boy's Name and Totally Made up for Girls
Middle Class Try Hard Bully Bait

flowery · 29/08/2019 21:32

I’m intrigued to see that Royal Babies names include Peaches...

Perhaps Harry and Meghan will go for that next time?

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 29/08/2019 21:33

Middle Class Try Hard Bully Bait

I’m there too @catherinevelindre

flowery · 29/08/2019 21:33

My boys’ names are from a) “it’s a bit girly for a boy” tribe and b) “trying too hard to be cool” tribe

Kyvia · 29/08/2019 21:37

I’ve worked out what my tribe would be

‘Most People Would Consider These Cat/Dog Names But My Pets Have Human Names, So Why Not Vice Versa’

neverornow · 29/08/2019 21:37

Shortened and sweet for both of mine

Royal, grandparent, traditional.

Foxglovesandprimroses · 29/08/2019 21:58

MNHQ ** it's Ptolemy not Ptomely

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 29/08/2019 21:59

We fall into ‘named after late parent’ tribe - is that one?

challengeyourreality · 29/08/2019 22:04

Brilliant idea. I can't find myself in any particular group but lovely work

Ribeebie · 29/08/2019 22:07

Divinely inspired

C0untDucku1a · 29/08/2019 22:07

Who is naming their baby Keith?

Kyvia · 29/08/2019 22:13

No one is naming their baby Keith.

I suspect this was written by a sixth-former doing a summer internship or something!

ReasonedCamper · 29/08/2019 22:14

I think you are a few tribes missing.
Hippy Bohemian. (River, India, Sky, Barley)
Hipster (not fashionable enough to know what these are but I know they exist. Arlo and Hero maybe.)
YooNique.(take your pick)

motortroll · 29/08/2019 22:19

Uncommon but traditional. Don't want anyone else in the school to have the same name but don't want them to be ridiculed either!

LaMarschallin · 29/08/2019 22:28

Sorry, I didn't have a good look at the tribes ("tribes"? Really?) but if there's an "unremarkable and boring" tribe, that'll be me.

Just wanted to say that the following:

Like Ptomely? Then you might like Nigel. Like Bear? Then you might also be talking about Jeremy.

reminded me strongly of one of those emails from Amazon saying: We noticed you ordered "The Life of Wittgenstein". You might also like "The Fanatics' Guide to Love Island".

Why?

I guess the "statistical textual analysis" will help to find out.

ThighThighOfthigh · 29/08/2019 22:38

I don't know!

I have rules, it must be a standalone 1 syllable name or with a very accepted 1 syllable nn ie Joseph to Joe.

Must be extremely sensible ie Jane or Anne

Not top 10 but no lower than 30.

I dislike grandparent chic.

Lavenderblues · 29/08/2019 22:42

I like names that

  1. are classic / elegant sounding
  2. outside the top 100 (hated being one of several)
  3. go with our surname
  4. travel well into other languages

Not sure what 'tribe' that would belong to Hmm
