Baby is due imminently and we don't have a name! So far, our choices are:

Emilia
Elowen
Ophelia (DH's choice)
Olive

Middle name will be Charlotte. Our surname is 1 syllable and doesn't suit y or ie ending names.

Elowen is lovely and very unique.

kenandbarbie · 28/08/2019 20:05

I prefer Olivia to Olive. Olive reminds me of a character out of Popeyes and last of the summer wine.

kenandbarbie · 28/08/2019 20:06

I don't think Emilia is that common. It's lovely.

DulciUke · 28/08/2019 20:12

I've never heard of the name Elowen, but I think that it sounds lovely. Second choice would be Emelia. Olive was my grandmother's name, so it sounds elderly to me, but that's just my personal situation!

Paperthin · 28/08/2019 20:18

I like Elowen too
Or
Ellen Charlotte
Olivia Charlotte
Rose Charlotte
Alexa(ndra) Charlotte
Eve
Rowan
?

aibutohavethisusername · 28/08/2019 21:00

How about Eloise

Chitarra · 28/08/2019 21:17

Emilia is not very common, but I assume it would be pronounced the same as Amelia which is very common!

MrsBertBibby · 28/08/2019 21:19

Jasmine is a bit dull. Also, Jazz is an ugly ugly nickname.

Astronica · 29/08/2019 03:01

Elowen is lovely and my easy favourite of your list. Love it with Charlotte as a middle too. I dislike Jasmine, and it was quite over-used in the 80s and 90s. Emilia and Ophelia are fine. Nothing wrong with Olive but just doesnn't appeal to me.

Jellycat00 · 29/08/2019 03:18

I don't like Ophelia but the others are nice. Not certain on Elowen. It's a bit elf from the Lord of the rings! 😆

Jasmine is lovely!

What about Eloise? Very similar sound to Elowen.

Or Elise?
Lavinia?

Jellycat00 · 29/08/2019 03:19

Jasmina? Then you can use the shortening, Mina which is sweet.

Expressedways · 29/08/2019 03:25

Elowen sounds like you’re spelling L-O-N. I haven’t heard it before but I don’t think it works at all in English. I really like all of your other names though including Jasmine.

TheRedFox · 29/08/2019 04:32

I agree with @Expressedways and think that Elowen sounds like you're saying the letters L-O-N so I'm afraid I'm not keen, but clearly very much in the minority.

I like the name Ophelia and don't really think of the Shakespeare character (although v familiar with Hamlet). If you choose this name for DD then it will become her name and friends and family will think of her and not another random character.

Good luck!

lottiegarbanzo · 29/08/2019 07:18

The emphasis when saying Elowen is quite different from spelling out L O N = Ell Oh En, with equal emphasis on each.

I suppose it is bit elfin-like but my first thought is that it is obviously Welsh.

lioness88 · 29/08/2019 07:34

Okay Ophelia is officially being veeto'd now!!

@Jellycat00 @lottiegarbanzo I agree Elowen sounds quite elvish but that's what I quite like about it!

Love Jasmina, I don't like the nn 'Jaz', Mina sounds a lot nicer.

If we used Emilia, we'd pronounce it as Emily-a to avoid the Amelia confusion.

@Paperthin love Alexandra!

lottiegarbanzo · 29/08/2019 07:48

Emily-a? No-one will say that. How do you say that? EH-mil-ee-(a), EH-mel-EE-a, or EH-mel-ee-A? None sound normal.

You can certainly emphasise the 'Eh' at the start but everyone will stress the 'Meel' syllable in Emilia - Eh-MEEL-ee-a.

LarkDescending · 29/08/2019 17:17

Jessamine?

TeaForTara · 29/08/2019 17:25

@lottiegarbanzo Perhaps the OP means Eh-MILL-i-a

AverageMummy · 29/08/2019 18:27

Can’t imagine anyone saying Emily-a so they’ll have a lifetime of ‘Emilia, yes one name....Emily-ah....no not hyphenated, like Amelia with an E, but pronounced Emily-a’

Fortunesrocks · 29/08/2019 18:33

I love Ophelia and Olive.

CatteStreet · 29/08/2019 22:06

Elowen is lovely. Not keen on Ophelia (glad you've ditched it) or Olive. Like Emilia but it's a bit overdone.

How about:
Emmeline
Ellen
Rhiannon

AverageAvenger · 29/08/2019 23:41

Elowen is just gorgeous.

AriadneCrete · 30/08/2019 01:57

@lottiegarbanzo I know an Emilia pronounced Eh-mill-i-a and everyone copes with it just fine!

OP, from your list I like Ophelia. As long as you don’t mind the tragic Hamlet connection, I think it’s a lovely name.

lottiegarbanzo · 30/08/2019 06:45

Of course you can pronounce the 'Eh' sound in Emilia clearly, that's completely normal.

What's not normal, is saying 'Emily-a'. Emily is pronounced completely differently (stress on first syllable), from Emilia (stress on second syllable).

Do you really know someone who everyone calls Emily-a?
