Is this too rhymey?

Hi all, we’re having real trouble picking a boy name for our soon to arrive bundle of joy. Our surname is Sims and my husband loves the name Finlay, to the point that he won’t consider anything else. He likes the nickname Fin but I’m worried that’s too rhymey with Sims. He says that no-one would ever use his nickname with his surname so doesn’t think that would be a problem but I don’t know what to make of it. Any opinions or any other suggestions very welcome!

Fin Sims is not great, sorry.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 28/08/2019 10:50

Finlay Sims sounds great, but Fin Sims not so much. Would be be Fin most of the time, or just a shortened version of it around the house occasionally?

Apolloanddaphne · 28/08/2019 10:51

Fin Sims is not great and people will use both names together a lot.

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/08/2019 10:52

I like it, short and clear.

Grufallosfriends · 28/08/2019 10:53

He'll be Fin Simms at school, I'd choose another name.

LittleDoritt · 28/08/2019 10:55

People will use his nickname and surname together All The Time once he's school aged.

Atlasta · 28/08/2019 10:55

No. Agree it will be used with surname.
In fact I think it's more likely he will be know as 'FinSims' as opposed to just Fin as he gets older.

user1493494961 · 28/08/2019 11:03

Yes, too rhymey. As he gets older, they will be used together all the time. I expect DH is only thinking about use amongst family and friends where he will just be Fin. Once at school he will Fin Sims a lot.

kenandbarbie · 28/08/2019 11:15

Well it's not great. People will use the nickname with the surname! But it's not that bad.

kenandbarbie · 28/08/2019 11:15

If you hate Fin Sims don't choose Finlay.

Vickisponge · 28/08/2019 11:33

Sorry, he'll be Fin Sims all the time. My full name is Victoria but I've never use my full first name when introducing myself. I'd always say Vicki followed by surname. You'll have to decide whether you like the rhyme.

DampInTheLakes · 28/08/2019 11:33

Could double barrel surnames if different?

1ToughCookie · 28/08/2019 13:24

Every kid I knew in school with a nickname why by nickname+surname. He'll be Fin Sims. Unless you always go by Finlay, then maybe he'll be Finlay Sims. Unless he or the classmates nickname him.

Could double barrel even if your surname is Sims too. My husband's name is double barrel, even though his mother took his father's surname. Otherwise her maiden name would have died out entirely, which I guess wasn't obvious upon her marriage.

bearfood · 28/08/2019 13:31

I agree that he will be known by surname...my ds is 15 and he is a Finn, there are two Finleys in his year and so all 3 are referred to as 'Finn surname' by everybody. However, I don't think the rhyming is an issue at all I quite like it!

Antonin · 28/08/2019 13:41

Doe rhyme but no totally. Fin Simm would be a closer rhyme but although N and M are closeearent identical in sound.
It wouldn’t bother me at all and I’m sure your DS won’t be worried.
Do you want to shorten same? If you call hIm Finley most of the time and introduce him as that to others he will likely identify with Finley and regard Fin as just an affectionate family name
I’d go for it

ToddlerTwinsAndUnhinged · 28/08/2019 13:57

Finlay is a very popular name so chances are there will be others called finlay in his class. And they will shorten it to Fin. I know several Fins'. No doubt the kids will use his surname as a way to differentiate between peers. But I really don't think it sounds that bad!

TixieLix · 28/08/2019 14:11

Even if you introduce him as Finlay everywhere, his school friends will definitely abbreviate to Finn, although the boys may call him Simsy in an affectionate way. I have to admit though that I keep thinking it's a mispronunciation of Swim Fins, so maybe the kids will NN him Flipper instead Grin.

You should be able to veto a name if you're not completely happy with it OP. Sounds like your DH has discounted your choices if this is the only name he will consider.

Cohle · 28/08/2019 14:21

Way too rhymey for me. He will absolutely be called "nickname surname" at school.

Fours6 · 28/08/2019 14:57

He definitely Will be called fin or finsims I know a few finlays as I wotk in schools all get called fin. But finsims is a cool name I like. It x

Grufallosfriends · 28/08/2019 14:58

I keep thinking it's a mispronunciation of Swim Fins

Grin
Spintops · 28/08/2019 21:16

I'm so shocked by the response to this. I don't see a problem with Fin Sims AT ALL. A lot of overthinking going on.

joystir59 · 28/08/2019 21:21

Fin Sims is absolutely fine imo.

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/08/2019 21:39

I agree joystir59 and Spintops, I have an alternative rhyming name through marriage and it's fine. In fact it's a smily happy name.

hairyturkey · 28/08/2019 21:57

I think it's fine but it looks better as Finn Sims to me.

Poetryinaction · 29/08/2019 16:06

I like it.
