I think it is so sweet for a baby/ little girl but not so sure about a grown up? We also have an Edie. Any similar alternatives also appreciated.

I use a diminutive all the time & it’s never caused me the slightest issue having the longer on my birth certificate. I’m confused why it would. Millions of people go by Pete, Jon, Kathy, Sue etc I can’t imagine most want to change their full name by deed poll.

I enjoyed having the option for a more formal name when needed.

TFSRM · 25/08/2019 10:50

I always thought it was short for Kathleen.

Beebea28 · 25/08/2019 11:01

Just coming from experience we registered my daughter by the long name ( proper name as MN would say) And called her a abbreviation from the start but it wasn’t the most obvious one you would assume straight away as this name lends itself to a lot of different shortening a little like Katherine. ( Kat, kitty, kate,Katy) etc. However after a few weeks it really did bother me that the name we called her wasn’t her name on BC and that is what we shall always call her and the name registered we never ever used. So my husband and I changed it at 4 months on her bc.

Cookit · 25/08/2019 11:50

I think it’s great but agree use Katherine.

The idea of a nickname and a full BC being confusing I find odd. If I think of everyone I know probably 50% of people are known by different names to their full birth names and no one has complained - some are known by middle names, others are Jamie for James, Joe for Jospeh, Kit for Christopher, Millie for Amelia etc. It’s quite standard.

Oysterbabe · 25/08/2019 12:01

I love it too but would probably use it as a nickname for something else.

Emmapeeler · 25/08/2019 12:08

I have a Catherine and Kitty is one of her several nicknames. She likes it. She opted to be Catherine at school so won’t feel like it’s not her name if she chooses a nickname in future. Though I also like Kitty as a name in its own right.

LadyKylieShagworthy · 25/08/2019 12:21

Love it, as a nickname for Katherine or Kathleen.

GreenFieldsofFrance · 25/08/2019 18:21

I have a few kittys in my family (Irish). I absolutely love the name. Dh vetoed it for our girls.

OtraCosaMariposa · 25/08/2019 18:32

It's far too cutesy for an adult.

Katherine is a better choice. If you want to call her Kitty as a baby, or Kit, or Kat - she has options.

CeceSL · 25/08/2019 18:35

Like it, also Polly, it’s similar?

Lotsofbuttons · 25/08/2019 19:08

I love it as a name and was going to use it bit my 2nd child however he was a ds rather than a dd.
Since then I’ve also taught Kitty (teenager) and I still love the name . I think it works well as a name by itself.
Much like a pp I put a full name on my 1 ds bc but have always called him by the diminutive and wished I had put what he actually gets called in his bc.
I’d say if you love Kitty go for it - It’s lovely for a baby and ages well too!

SegregateMumBev · 25/08/2019 20:48

Google kitty of Coleraine and see how it was a girls name celebrated in Irish song.

GreigLaidlawsbarofsoap · 25/08/2019 21:13

The only Kitty's I know (3) are all nicknames for Catherine/Catriona. So to me it's a nickname rather than a "proper" name, but it is a great name and I can see why people use it.

m0therofdragons · 25/08/2019 21:37

I have a Kitty who is named after my great aunt. Dd is now 8 and it's perfect for her. Occasionally her older sister calls her Kit but not often. We get so many comments about her name. It's not a nickname (despite mn opinion) as it's been a name in its own right since the 16th century.

DramaAlpaca · 25/08/2019 21:39

It's nice as a diminutive of Katherine.

Newyearsameoldshit · 25/08/2019 21:42

LOVE. Husband has vetoed but would be my first choice.

C0untDucku1a · 25/08/2019 21:42

I had it on my list for ds. Katherine on bc.

diddlediddle · 25/08/2019 22:51

I know a kitty and it's her full name. I like it.

Thatnovembernight · 25/08/2019 22:57

Beautiful. Had it on my list both times! Would have been short for Kathryn.
I have a longer name with a shorter ‘nickname’ and have never had any problems or confusion over it if that helps.

CatSmize · 25/08/2019 23:56

I have always loved it but not any of the names that it is short for so I would use just Kitty. However, when I asked my friends what they thought of it, they all thought it was silly Sad

Shame as I love it.

diddlediddle · 26/08/2019 06:47

@CatSmize And that's why you don't ask your friends they're opinions on baby names!!

I don't like most of my friends' kids' names - and I'm sure they feel the same way about mine. But it's individual choice.

Shmithecat2 · 26/08/2019 06:49

I had a great aunt who was officially Kathleen, but was called Kitty.

CatSmize · 26/08/2019 10:47

And that's why you don't ask your friends they're opinions on baby names!!

@diddlediddle Completely agree! Although in my case I mentioned I liked the name to my friends about 5 years before even contemplating having a baby when I was still single. Since getting pregnant our baby name list is strictly under wraps Wink

I'm having a boy though so unfortunately all those lovely girls' names like Kitty will never see the light of day anyway Grin

IsobelRae23 · 26/08/2019 11:10

I love it. I know one, she’s in her late teens.

mintymellons · 26/08/2019 15:05

I have a Kitty, so it's a yes from me! People often admire her name. We didn't want it to be short for anything (don't like Katherine). I think a child's name grows with it. There are plenty of adults with those sorts of names, I think it gives them an edge, makes them stand out a bit.
