What do you think about Hermione for a little girl? I love it, and I love Harry Potter, DH warming to it slightly but still taking some convincing. Everyone else I've mentioned it to laughs

It’s lovely - I’m actually surprised it’s not more popular given how many people love Harry Potter. I suppose people are weary that that’s all people think of, but I don’t think it matters. She’s a great character and it’s a lovely name in its own right I think.

Atlasta · 21/08/2019 19:03

Loved it when I was reading Shakespeare.
18year old me was definitely going to call my future daughter Hermione.
However Harry Potter put me off it. Although I love HP, it has made it too mainstream and most will associate it with the character.

For some reason I find it very hard to pronounce. I have finally managed to wrap my mouth around the name - I work with someone with this name. She found my difficulty amusing.

daisypond · 21/08/2019 19:48

It’s nice. I’d think of the Ancient Greek character and the Shakespearean one way before Harry Potter.

SingingSands · 21/08/2019 20:01

Go for it, it's a classic.

Both DH and I regret not using it, but our DD was born in 2004 and Potter-mania was rife. We had always loved the name and wish we had been braver, our DD would have totally carried it off.

Megs4x3 · 21/08/2019 20:21

We have a Hermione and can honestly say that no-one has responded to it with oh, Harry Potter! It’s a lovely name with a rich history and ours was named for St Hermione.

I think Hermione in HP actually makes this name more usable. Their peers will be familiar with it and just think it’s a normal name.

I’ve come across two when teaching in secondary schools. It works well.

Wallabyone · 21/08/2019 21:07

I love it Smile

AverageMummy · 21/08/2019 21:45

I think it’s lovely but my husband was having none of it

Sophronia · 21/08/2019 21:58

I like it. I think it is usable despite the HP connection.

HumphreyCobblers · 21/08/2019 22:03

I have a Hermione in my family, predating Harry Potter.

The HP books just meant that she wasn't called Hermy-own any more.

It is a beautiful name.

GraceWatt · 09/09/2019 14:20

If you like the name, use it.

Yes, there is an association with the character Hermione Granger from Harry Potter, but there are other associations e.g. famous British actresses like Hermione Gingold, Hermione Baddeley, Hermione Norris and Hermione Corfield and other literature which used the name e.g. Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale and Hermione from The Durrells.

David Bowie was going out with a woman called Hermione years ago, he sang a song titled Letter to Hermione and she was the “girl with the mousy hair” from the song Life on Mars.

I’ve met three girls with the name, two who were born before the Harry Potter books and one who goes to the same school as my niece. Also, I knew a guy who was going out with a woman with the name about a decade ago.

@misspg08

You have got to be kidding me! If someone says the name Elvis then only one person comes to mind - Elvis Presley. There is no need to mention his last name, like Prince Nelson, Beyoncé Knowles, Madonna Ciccone and a few other singers, only a first name is needed.

They all did/do have the fortune of having unusual names that those people are the first people who other people think of when their names are mentioned.

Icantthinkofanynewnames · 09/09/2019 15:41

It’s great and agree with a PP that Minnie is a great nickname. Hermy is beyond awful though!

mumofbun · 10/09/2019 15:50

I love it and there are lots of good comments here. But please don't shorten it to Hermy - lends itself to jokes about hermaphrodites.
