I really don't love Rae as an add on, just because every other little girl at the moment is Ellie May or Rosie Rae or some variation thereof. It's a bit faddy imo, and it always seems to be little girls who get stuck with fad names.

Elyse itself I think is really pretty, and I wouldn't worry too much about the unusual spelling. I've spent my life having to spell my name and it hasn't done me any harm.

@Ligresa dd1 is helping teach kids swimming and a baby has joined called Khaleesi Rainbow.

I love Elise, but I think like other PP have said she'll be spelling it out forever. Also on first glance I read it as "Elsye" (Elsie). as although a valid spelling, it's so uncommon a spelling that it might as well be a non-valid spelling IYSWIM. (Sorry).

The Rae, I think again it's not a flow with the Elyse spelling. Basically the 'y' in Elyse takes the place phonetically of the letter ' i ' , but the "ae" in Rae takes the place phonetically of the ' y '. It's sort of a mental tongue-twister.

On first glance you want to pronounce it Elsie Ruy, as in to rhyme with Buy, rather than El-eeese Ray.

Sorry I dislike Elyse but Elise is lovely. Rae is ghastly.

I would assume she was from a working class background based on the youneek spelling of "Elyse" and the use of Rae, which is often hyphenated with things like "Lacey-Rae". If you don't mind that association go for it. If you would prefer that she wasn't pigeonholed by other people for the rest of her life maybe use Elise and reconsider Rae.

Elsie Rae goes together better. I'm not keen on Elise or Elyse.

I think Elyse as a tribute to your brother is sweet. And people will mostly hear the name rather than read it, and it sounds nice.

I personally had no issues pronouncing it. Iv had a lifetime of correcting and spelling my name for people, it's no hardship to me, like some PP suggested it may be. That being said, it's my surname that's a tongue twister, I'll hopefully get to change that some day?
Personally, it's not a name i would choose, but i love that you are trying to tip the hat to her Uncle. It's your child, it's your choice, it would be a boring place if we all liked the same things.

I read this thread and it made me feel a bit defensive towards the OP (i dont know her), I know she asked for the opinion, and I'm no snowflake or one to sugarcoat shit, but i just found some responses to be unnecessarily rude. So iv tried to be more positive in my comment.

I think if we go with Elyse, I’ll choose this spelling. I know most of you hate it but hey, thank god it’s my baby!

However way back up the thread someone suggested Ely as a middle name. That’s something we’d never considered, mainly because we’re not having a boy. But I like that idea!
The only other name I like Leila, so Leila Ely could work, but part of me wants to use Elyse as it’s been my favourite name for ever, and this is probably our last baby!

Eliza? Has the Ely sound much more pronounced than Elyse. It's a far prettier name. Ely-sa. (Not suggesting you spell it that way).

There was a girl in my class at school (am mid-twenties) called Elyce which may avoid the Elsie confusion. I think its lovely, but not as keen on Rae with it.

I like the name Elise and don't mind the Elyse spelling especially given the family history. Rae needs a rethink though.

Please drop the Rae! I love the reason behind Elyse and I think Elyse Marie has a lovely flow to it.

Rae is a scottish surname. I know an adult Rae, short for Rachel. I always thought it was a nice name. It does fall into the May/Mae, Rae, Rose, Grace filler mn category.

I love it, OP. I think Rae on its own is a lovely name too. I have a unisex one syllable name and love it.

Now that you mention your brother, I understand why you want the Elyse spelling and in those circumstances it’s lovely. She’ll only have to correct the spelling / pronunciation once and then people will know!

Rae... isn’t my favourite but that’s just personal taste. I’ve never met a Rae outside America. I much prefer Marie and Hope.

I think it’s odd. ‘Rae’ is one of those middle names that people just add on to make the first name sound prettier, in a way, but ‘Elyse Rae’ really doesn’t flow nicely, so it just seems pointless to have it there.

Elyse Marie gets my vote, pretty name for child and fine for adult.

FWIW, Marie and Hope are both a lot better than Rae. And I think all the reading of 'Elyse' as 'Elsie' on this thread is because Elsie is everywhere atm - I don't think it'll be a problem all her life (any more than it would be if she were called Elise - which, sorry OP, is still my preference).

I didn’t want to give my children names that suggested a specific class (& no I don’t mean ‘chav’ I mean any strong class association) but it’s quite hard to avoid. I regularly get told Clara is a posh name & I had thought it was ‘classless’ so who knows.

As you say it’s your baby & if you’re ok with you (& them through their life) being judged by a unique spelling - then you’re making that decision in an informed way.

All names will be disliked by some for one reason or another and as long as you’re ok with it it shouldn’t bother you. Like when people choose a name that can be pronounced 2 ways - if they know that in advance & don’t mind people regularly getting it wrong then it’s not an issue.

Elyse is not a name I’d pick but I can understand your reasons.
