Baby girl name goes well with Yin

Hi all!

My husband and I are expecting our first baby girl in early November. He is Chinese and I'm Japanese. We are not native English speakers and kinda stuck on first names. Our last name is Yin (pronounced in).

Some names we are considering are: Freya, Eleanor, Evelyn, Violet, Lucy, Lucia, Iris, Valentina, Eliza, Aya and Vivienne.

Which one do you think would flow well with Yin? Other suggestions are also welcome!

Thanks in advance!

I think from your list Violet, Lucy or Valentina flow the nicest. If I were you I'd avoid any names that are vowel heavy, you want something with a hard consonant like the V. That's just my own preference though :)

Eliza Yin

I like Iris and Aya from your list.

Girls I know with one syllable, Chinese surnames:

Amy, Katrina, Ava, Emily, Leah

From your list I love these and they work best with your surname: Eleanor, Violet and Eliza.

Some others I like with your surname:
Tabitha
Georgia
Alexandra
Susannah

I’d find Aya Yin difficult to say.

I don’t like the name Eliza.

All the other names are fine.

Gloschick · 09/08/2019 02:36

Grace Yin

Aus84 · 09/08/2019 02:40

I think they all work except Aya and Valentina which don't flow.

Ritascornershop · 09/08/2019 02:43

I like Iris best with Yin. It’s clear where Iris ends and Yin begins, which is not the case with all of your choices (depending on the English accent of whoever is speaking). I love the name Freya, but I think it blurs into Yin, ditto Aya. Evelyn and Vivienne rhyme with Yin so don’t work for that reason (sounds a bit off to the English-speaking ear imo to have rhyming names).

SnowdropFox · 09/08/2019 02:44

I like Lucy and Eleanor.

I don't like Aya as when I say it aloud it sounds a bit like "Are ya (you) in?" with your surname.

justilou1 · 09/08/2019 02:46

Not Violet... kids will call her Vio Yin like the instrument. (I love the name though) How about Iris or Ivy?

rededucator · 09/08/2019 02:55

Not Evelyn Yin it sounds almost like a stutter as the last sound of first name is same as surname

BobbyGentry · 09/08/2019 03:57

If you think about the abbreviated shorter nicknames then Ellie Yin (Eleanor or Eliza) works well, Viv Yin (Vivienne) not so much, Eve (Evelyn) Yin has a ring to it, Vi (Violet) Yin sounds a bit like vying to do something, Tina (Valentina) Yin works well, Fe (Freya) Yin doesn’t roll so readily, iris doesn’t shorten as it is already short.

Freya, Eleanor, Evelyn, Violet, Lucy, Lucia, Iris, Valentina, Eliza, Aya and Vivienne.

Lovely names and congratulations 🎊🎈🎉🍾

Top tip but traditional European Royal names usually can’t be faltered, Elizabeth (Lizzy) Yin, Charlotte (Lotty) Yin, Mary, Alice. Victoria (Vicky Yin), Marina, Alexandra (Lexie Yin), Margaret (Maggie Yin), Diana (Di Yin - just no), Anne, Sophie, Louise, Catherine (Katie Yin), Meagan (Meg Yin), Beatrice (Bea Yin - no!), Louise & Helena (Lena Yin) to name a few.

I like Valentina (Tina) and Alexandra (Lexie) most xXx

MsInconspicuous · 09/08/2019 05:12

I think Iris yin sounds lovely! Definitely not Evelyn

BikeRunSki · 09/08/2019 05:27

Evelyn Yin does not flow well

Equatoria · 09/08/2019 10:31

I like Eleanor Yin.

Louisa Yin
Anna Yin
Isobel Yin
Vanessa Yin
Nina Yin
Stephanie Yin
Emma Yin
Tamara Yin
Sara Yin
Diana Yin
Martha Yin
Imogen Yin
Susannah (Susie) Yin
Naomi Yin
Hannah Yin
Zoe Yin
Pearl Yin
Megan Yin
Alice Yin

Ellmau · 10/08/2019 11:13

I think Valentina and Eliza flow the best. Iris and Violet work too.

Lucy flows too well, and it sounds like one name (Lucian). Freya, Aya and Lucia - too many y sounds close together. I wouldn't have anything with a very last sound of n either (Vivienne and Evelyn), but Viviana could work.

Changedname81 · 10/08/2019 14:07

Lucy is lovely as is Violet

I think Jennifer also would be a lovely combo with the surname

Antonin · 10/08/2019 23:11

Grace Yin will be misheard as Grayson and Alice Yin as Alison.
Actually it is quite difficult striking a balance between names that don’t flow and those that flow too well (elision)

FenellaMaxwell · 11/08/2019 08:50

Aya and Evelyn don’t go at all. The others would all be nice.

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 15/08/2019 23:07

Vivienne Yin
Elizabeth Yin

Cookit · 16/08/2019 09:27

I wouldn’t use Aya with Yin but I think the rest work well.

I think since it’s such a short, uncomplicated surname you could use the vast majority of names out there.

Cookit · 16/08/2019 09:27

I really like the name Lucy btw.

Bluebellssnowbells · 16/08/2019 17:08

Eleanor Yin is great

veeboo · 16/08/2019 19:42

Have just seen Constance on another thread and thought it might work?
