Is Ellie now dated?

Is Ellie now dated? If so when did it pass? Sorry if that’s poor English - not my first language

OP posts:

I know 2 that are 18/19.
Ella is more classic and timeless. Ellie always sounds like a shortened form of something or a nickname for Eleanor or Elsbeth.

Bristolgal · 10/08/2019 21:34

I really really don't get the idea that names can be dated! How can Ellie be dated but Ivy/Florence/Stanley etc not?

In my opinion, if it's a real name then you just don't need to worry! My children have names that were popular in the 80s and 90s, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't use them! They're lovely names imo.

Ellie is pretty and sweet and can be short for Eleanor, Elouise or Ellen. Go for it OP!!

PS I'm pretty sure it's only MNers who think of names as dated. Nobody in the 'real world' thinks like that! Wink

Quite right Bristolgal

AverageMummy · 12/08/2019 11:07

@Bristolgal you don’t think some names sound dated to specific ages? Derek, Brian, Sheila, Muriel etc ???

I don’t really worry about it myself as I can’t see the issue with being dated to your actual generation - but I do understand what people mean.

applepieicecream · 13/08/2019 22:14

I absolutely love it, one of my very favourite names. To be fair the Ellie’s I know are all mid to late teens and they are all Ellie’s, none have a longer name. I think it’s such a pretty name and also love Ella

IHaveBrilloHair · 13/08/2019 22:15

It's very dated, and isn't a great name anyway.

Jellycat00 · 14/08/2019 03:58

Yes i agree that those names conjure up the image of people in their 60s/70s, but I'd bet money on it that those names are back in fashion in a decade or two! And a name like Ellie, to me, isn't as strongly attached to any generation.

My point really is that i don't understand why lots of people are worried about a name dating a child - they were born now, when that name is in fashion, so what? And if you want to give a child a name that you love but you feel you shouldn't because it's from a different generation, then that seems barmy to me! Wink

SlowMoFuckingToes · 14/08/2019 04:27

I know an Elllie for Elizabeth and an Ellie for Eleanor. Both are under 3.

Sparklysunflower · 14/08/2019 05:53

Yes, Ellie and Ella are very dated to the 1990s/2000s as they were so fashionable then. Anything that becomes very trendy quickly tends to fall out of fashion and start to sound dated.

Names that are more 'classic' ore never become super trendy can't fall out of fashion and therefore won't ever sound dated.

BillywilliamV · 14/08/2019 05:58

My Elinor is a Nellie, now you that is old fashioned...

Flowerspowersy · 14/08/2019 14:52

Very dated - both Ellie and Ella are very early 2000s.

Theonewiththeblonde · 14/08/2019 17:47

I teach/have taught a LOT of 90s babies named Ellie

Believe it or not, MNers are real people and are very much in the ‘real world’. The difference is on MN, people ask outright for opinions and therefore people feel free to say ‘yes that name is dated’

I've known an Ellie who would be in her late 40s now, two in their early 40s, and two who are 10ish.

I don't think it's dated at all?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Never struck me as a name that would date really?

Vivi890 · 15/08/2019 09:44

I think yes, it is a little dated. Eleanor is lovely but now I think a little Eleanor would probably be nicknamed Nell or Norah rather than Ellie, as the first two nicknames are more in fashion and Ellie seems a little dull now.

FishCanFly · 15/08/2019 12:18

not sure if date, but such a boring name

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 15/08/2019 14:16

Ellie is lovely.
