Iris or Erin

Hi I’ve posted before and I think we’re down to the final two.

I love them both DH prefers Erin and thinks Iris is too like the eye Iris ( I think flower). I like both but I’m a little worried about Erin being an Irish name and we have no connection to Ireland. A pp pointed out that it would be strange to use it without a Irish connection and now I’m torn.

Surname is long and hard to spell and pronounce. Middle name may be Elizabeth but don’t want it to determine the first name (if that makes sense)

Thanks

I actually think it's nice, but I wouldn't think of it as an Irish name.

Sunandrainallconfusedhere · 04/08/2019 09:07

Be honest about how those you know will pronounce them!! Our ndn dd was called Urin!
Poor kid!

Tbh I had no idea Erin was an Irish name. It's really popular in Scotland, I always assumed it was Scottish!

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 04/08/2019 09:23

Erin is beautiful.

Classy!

RuthW · 04/08/2019 09:34

Erin in awful. Iris is lovely imo.

Astronica · 04/08/2019 09:36

Erin was a popular name in Australia where I am in the 80s and 90s, so, nice as it is, I'm a bit over it and it feels a bit dated to me. Iris feels more interesting and up-to-date to me.

Pineapplefish · 04/08/2019 09:37

I love both but Iris is my favourite

Letthemysterybe · 04/08/2019 09:39

I love both Iris and Erin, but Iris is my
favourite. I think of the flower bu the eye connection doesn’t bother me, the iris is the beautiful part of the eye!

Sophronia · 04/08/2019 09:46

Iris is much nicer! Erin is dated and makes me think of “urine”

Brokenfurnitureandroses · 04/08/2019 09:46

I don’t know any Erins and I live in Ireland. I think it may be a name used by those of Irish descent in the UK and elsewhere. It’s a lovely name though.

Frith2013 · 04/08/2019 09:47

Iris.

I wouldn’t worry about the Irish connection. I have a Hebrew name and my sons’ names are Welsh and Polish!

Iris

If you like them both why not just keep them as the shortlist and decide which one suits baby better when it arrives...

NuffingChora · 04/08/2019 10:08

Iris is SO much nicer.

Peachbubble · 04/08/2019 10:32

Iris!

I've been reading up on the name Erin as it's my DH'a favourite, and it's not one that's ever really been used in Ireland. Theory is that it became popular in the US with people who had Irish roots, but it's not actually an Irish name

underthebridgedowntown · 04/08/2019 10:49

(Also - I like both names, but it sounds like your favourite is Erin so just go for it!)

midsomermurderess · 04/08/2019 12:37

Iris. Erin makes me think of tinned and packet soup.

Ellmau · 04/08/2019 13:38

Iris is lovely, and has a beautiful flower.

I think of Erin as an American name.

CakeRattleandRoll · 04/08/2019 14:02

Iris is lovely. I think of the flower rather than the eye, and I teach Human Biology!

BigMamaFratelli · 04/08/2019 14:06

I prefer Erin, but them I'm biased because it's dd's name. No Irish connection and nobody has ever mentioned it.

Cbeebiesrehab · 04/08/2019 14:16

I prefer Iris.

I like Erin and I totally disagree that using it without any Irish heritage could be classed as cultural appropriation! Most names used commonly come from different countries!
