Diminutives for Magdalene..?

Hi all, we've finally named our daughter Magdalene Helena, but are not sure what diminutive/nickname to use - any ideas?

We don't like Mags/Maggie, DH doesn't like Meg, I don't particularly like Maddie... DH is part-French, btw, in case that inspires anything..! TIA Smile

The most natural shortening for Magdalene is Magda or Maggie.

LakeIsle48 · 30/07/2019 20:21

Lainey

MiniMaxi · 30/07/2019 20:30

Lenny?

Cathyheathcliff · 30/07/2019 20:35

I was thinking Dalia would be a nice nickname

BloodyhellMartha · 30/07/2019 20:38

Every Magdalene I know is Magda. Anything else seems a bit contrived, to be honest.

If you were Jennifer you'd be Jenny or Jen for short. Not Neef or Nifa Sorry.

I agree. Perhaps choose another name if you don't like these.

Some suggestions on here sound like completely different names eg Dalia, Lainey Confused

autumnkate · 30/07/2019 21:50

Magdalene surely is pronounced Magda-lin so how does Magda not trip off your tongue?

imtheonlyupsieone · 30/07/2019 21:53

Don't really get why people:

  1. Need to decide a nn immediately - they usually evolve, that's the whole point. presumably you like the actual name so just use that to start with.
  2. Pick first names where they don't like the obvious nicknames and/or haven't thought about shortened versions before picking the name.

In this case OP if you're desperate to choose one I'd go for Lena given that the sound is in both her first and second names.

nothingtowearever · 30/07/2019 21:57

The only Magdalene I know never has it shortened- don't shorten it if you don't want too!

TeapotofTerror · 30/07/2019 22:08

I'd go with Lainey I think.

BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch · 30/07/2019 22:13

I have a friend called Magdalena and everyone calls her Maddie.

SallyWD · 30/07/2019 22:14

Lena pronounced Layna is beautiful

autumnkate · 30/07/2019 22:43

Magdalene is a stunning name but it doesn’t make the Layna or Lennie sound. Trying to use those therefore doesn’t work in my opinion.

SemperIdem · 30/07/2019 23:00

Magda, surely?

whatausername · 31/07/2019 05:23

@BloodyhellMartha 😂 so true

MikeUniformMike · 31/07/2019 10:40

Why not name her Magdalena (pron. Magda-layna) and announce when telling people her name that she will be known as Lena (pron. Layna).
Both are nice names.

Sunshineys · 31/07/2019 11:12

I'd pronounce Magdalena as Magda-len-a. Their is no y sound.

But I prefer Magdalene, pronounced Magda-len

Sunshineys · 31/07/2019 11:14

Op, if you love Magdalene, just use it. No need to shorten it!

My dd has a 3 syllable name that practically never gets shortened, either by us or by friends at school.

Magissa · 31/07/2019 11:20

My friend is Magdalana pronounced Magdalana. Nn is Magzi.

Didiplanthis · 31/07/2019 11:26

Not sure why Lena/Lin is not reasonable. Charlotte is shortened to Lottie ?

AuntieAvocado · 31/07/2019 14:35

And Olivia becomes Livvie.

I grew up with a Helena known as Lena, so it doesn’t seem an odd shortening to me.

AuntieAvocado · 31/07/2019 14:37

@autumnkate - not usually Magda-lin I don’t think. I’ve only ever heard it as Mag-da-lay-na with the emphasis on Lay.

TurnAroundWhenPossible · 31/07/2019 14:44

My lovely late friend was Magdalene; she was always referred to as Mally.

Chakano · 31/07/2019 14:56

maggie, Madge, livvie, liv, lena, lennie,

Purplecatshopaholic · 31/07/2019 15:01

Why call her a name you are not actually going to use....? Genuine question. If her name that you chose is Magdalene call her that! My friends wee boy is Sam because they knew they were never actually going to call him Samuel. Quite right too..
