What do you think of this for a girl?
DH and I have gone round and round in circles and this is one name we both really like. It goes perfectly with DS name.
I like the fact it's an informal name, but sounds quite cool and spunky but not cutesie.
I would like a longer bc name but the only ones I can think of are India (too strange an association for us as we have no connection to the country) indigo (nice but a bit too hippy) and Indiana (Jones).
Is it acceptable on it's own? I dont want a name that raises eyebrows, but I can really imagine a little Indie.
Also which spelling?

I know an Indi. I really like it 😊

Colourfulest · 18/07/2019 18:45

Oh but from your two spellings I prefer Indie.

DinoEggz · 18/07/2019 18:46

Short for Indiana Jones?

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 18/07/2019 18:49

Lots of people call their daughter India with no association with the country. It's more classic and gives your dd options

Clownfish123 · 18/07/2019 18:51

Thanks colourful.
Ladybird - that's a fair point and I will consider it. I do actually like the name India but would never choose it if it wasn't for liking Indie. Also she will likely have blonde hair and fair skin and I struggle to imagine a blonde India but maybe that's just me!

Of the 2 definitely Indie but I’m not wild about the nascar association (Indy 500) although that’s a connection I doubt many Brits would make. I don’t think it needs a longer version, India is ok but as long as it’s not Indiana- I take it you’ve never been there if you’re considering it as a baby name?!

breakfastpizza · 18/07/2019 18:57

I think they'd forever be asked what it's short for...

Indira is pretty. India is pretty common now and I doubt that most have a connection to the actual country.

gracepoolesrum · 18/07/2019 18:58

Indy is a newspaper to me, but like all your alternatives!

daisypond · 18/07/2019 19:02

No, I don’t like it, though it’s OK if short for something- though please not India. It’s very bland and cutesy and would be silly on a grownup.

diddlediddle · 18/07/2019 19:03

Another vote for Indira nn Indie/Indy

Potatopia · 18/07/2019 19:03

Tinkety · 18/07/2019 19:06

Thinking outside the box:

Rosalind
Lucinda
Belinda

unicornsprinklesss · 18/07/2019 19:07

Indira is lovely!
Indie spelling x

SuntanC · 18/07/2019 19:08

Lots of babies called Indy born in Scotland since the 2014 referendum. Are you Scottish?

Clownfish123 · 18/07/2019 19:15

I think Indira is very Indian sounding a name, although it is pretty I can't imagine using it.
We are not Scottish. English and Irish and most definitely not nationalists. I like Indie as it has a vaguely boho vibe but without being extremely hippy. I'm leaning towards India as a full name perhaps to give options.. hmmm.
Thanks for the other options of Rosalind, Belinda and Lucinda but I'm not sure any of them feel right somehow.
Thanks for all your opinions so far.

Love it - Indie is best spelling

Dollywilde · 18/07/2019 19:18

If it helps I knew a cute blue eyed blonde baby called India born in 2000 so she’ll be a teen now! Personally I’m not a fan of names that sound like nicknames so I’d go with it as a nickname, but that’s just me.

mollyblack · 18/07/2019 19:28

I love it and don't think you need to find a longer name to use it as an abbreviation

GinasGirl · 18/07/2019 19:38

I know an 8 year old Indie, he is really cool!

HerRoyalNotness · 18/07/2019 19:48

India Hicks is a tall, blond, English woman

I had an india, nn Indie

I toyed with Indiana for DD2 in tribute, kind of wish I went for that now, but we live in the US so may have been weird

I also had Indira on the list.

YahBasic · 18/07/2019 19:49

I went to university with two very blonde, willowy India’s.

DramaAlpaca · 18/07/2019 20:05

Just go with Indie, it's fine.

Peachbubble · 18/07/2019 20:13

I think it's fine to use India, even if you have no connection to the country. I'd go for India on the bc, but use Indie as her nn if it were me.

hippy1952 · 18/07/2019 20:35

My granddaughter is called India. She is 14 and a tall, slim, blue eyed, fair haired, fair skinned beautiful girl. Our family has no connections with India!

Shadow1234 · 18/07/2019 21:11

I prefer Indie to India.
