I don't know, perhaps it's because his biological mother Angie Bowie still refers to him as Zowie.

I actually like Kim and Kanye’s daughter’s name North. However I wouldn’t use it if my last name was West

Zowie (Zoe) for a boy is as bad as something like Kerry. Poor sod. No wonder he chose to call himself Joey then Joe for a few years.
