Amalia?

Wanted to get thoughts on the name Amalia. My husband is German and suggested it, apparently its quite a traditional name but I've never heard of it. I think it sounds pretty, but my initial feeling was that it sounded made up!

I think it sounds nice too. I wouldn’t have guessed German but it doesn’t sound made up to my ear.

HappyDinosaur · 18/07/2019 09:34

It sounds pretty but written down I wonder if some will think it's Amelia spelt incorrectly? I realize it's not but the name Amelia is really popular so it might be what people expect it to be when reading it, if you see what I mean. If you like the name I doubt that's a big problem though really.

It was on my list but then the (then to be) king and queen used it for their daughter. She'll be queen here within my children's lifetimes so that made it a no-go for me. IIRC one of the Luxembourg princesss is also an Amalia. It's certainly not made up! It's a variant of Amelia. Isn't it?

Dizzywizz · 18/07/2019 09:40

I think it’s lovely!

MmeBufo · 18/07/2019 09:41

(I'd have been a lot less bothered if DD wasn't due so very soon after the princess in question was born)

GrapefruitIsGross · 18/07/2019 09:44

If you’re in the UK I’d guess you’d get it mispronounced/misspelt as Amelia a lot.

joystir59 · 18/07/2019 09:45

Lovely!

florascotia2 · 18/07/2019 09:54

MmeBufo Amalia is the original version; Amelia is the variant.
They come from an old Germanic word-element 'amal' , which means 'work'

Rather confusingly, Emilia, which sounds and looks similar, comes from a different, Latin root - the family name Aemilius, which means 'rival'.

someonesmother · 18/07/2019 09:54

Thanks for the feedback so far! To clarify, we live in Germany but have a lot of ties to the UK and certainly haven't ruled out living there in the future.

I know one and she's known as Mali. I like it a lot.

ZebraKid71 · 18/07/2019 23:04

I know of one in the uk who gets called marley for short. I like it but is constantly having it mistaken for amelia.

I wouldn't use it in the uk due to that but elsewhere would be fine.

AlliKaneErikson · 19/07/2019 08:01

I know an Amalia and I think it’s a lovely name.

Enko · 19/07/2019 09:12

I like it. Grew up in Denmark so have not a few over my life. Always thought it was a pretty name

Cookit · 19/07/2019 09:35

I know a Swedish Amalia. I like it much more than Amelia.

Lastbustowhitehawk · 19/07/2019 09:52

I know an adult Amalia and think it's a beautiful name 😊

SmartPlay · 19/07/2019 12:40

I think it's lovely. It's the one I like most of all the variations - Amelia, Amelie, Emilie/Emily, Emilia.

Pieceofpurplesky · 19/07/2019 12:45

Love it. I teach a very lovely Amalia - never for it mixed up or thought it was Amelia

DramaAlpaca · 19/07/2019 13:02

It's a lovely name.

IsobelRae23 · 19/07/2019 16:34

It’s pretty.

someonesmother · 24/07/2019 22:43

Thanks everyone! I've been thinking about it for a few days now and it's gone to the top of our list 🙂. Her sister is Eleanor. I'm 38 weeks now so need to settle on a name!

I really like it. Would be slightly put off by the millions of Amelia’s meaning spelling / pronunciation mistakes are likely but overall I’d still think it’s a great name

InvisibleToEveryone · 25/07/2019 23:35

I know an adult Amaelia.
Said A-may-lee-ah.

Notmydalek · 26/07/2019 15:55

I really like it. I’ve not a name I’ve heard of before and I’d not have guessed German. It has lots of good nickname potential too and goes well with Eleanor.

Sakura7 · 26/07/2019 15:59

I know one, she's from Romania and is a really nice person. So good associations for me. It's a pretty name without being too cutesy, and it seems to travel well.

littlebitstressed · 27/07/2019 08:43

It’s lovely! It’s also Spanish and we’re considering it if one of our babies due in September is a girl
