Don't know what I'm having well a baby hopefully so need boys and girls names.

I have absolutely no idea. It's such an awkward name.

Stanley 😆

Could you double barrel the surname?

Sauvignonblanket · 17/07/2019 10:04

I agree with pp - three syllables and something a little bit frilly or softer to take the edge off the blunt surname (but think about nicknames and how they will work because it's much more likely with a longer name).

I would avoid names ending in a vowel sound, because it risks sounding like a made-up country.

MrsBertBibby · 17/07/2019 12:47

Dominic Stan works so well because the C at the end makes you stop before starting to say "Stan". With the combination of a very short surname and the "country" thing, you want it to break there.

CountFosco · 17/07/2019 12:48

My default suggestion for a tricky surname are good traditional names like John or Robert but in this case it won't work.

Is there an alternative surname you can use, assume this is the father's surname? What is your surname? Would double barrelled work? What names have traditionally been used in this family, are any of them suitable?

MrsBertBibby · 17/07/2019 12:50

Much harder for girls.

Miriam Stan
Edith Stan

HeartZone · 17/07/2019 13:06

Han Stan .... would become handstand

mananaa · 17/07/2019 14:08

I think it best to avoid names with short vowels or else it's sounds like a -stan country. (Anna Stan, Kevin Stan, Samantha Stan, Zachary Stan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan)

So look for more longer vowels

Laura Stan
Amelia Stan
Marlo Stan

Levi Stan
Arlo Stan
Jacob Stan

As PPs have said, give the baby your surname. Problem solved.

Don't know if you're married or not but if you are I hope you kept your name!

PuppyMonkey · 17/07/2019 14:18

I think some of these suggestions sound really tongue twisty. Sebastian Stan - yikes.

It’s a tricky name but how about:

Charlotte Stan
Verity Stan
Christopher Stan
William Stan.

Or, I’d just change the name to Stannis in honour of Game of Thrones.Grin

wellytan · 17/07/2019 17:39

My surname is Feoktistova so not any better.

Not really a big fan of very frilly names like Maribel or Flowella for girls.
I have two dd's from a previous relationship called Saffron and Yasmin if that helps.

Gabriel and Jacob are a maybe.
I really like Emil but Emil Stan definitely sounds like a small country.

Oh that is such a name! So sad not to use it!

OooErMissus · 17/07/2019 19:10

Your surname is way better! Way.

And if you have DC from a previous relationship, all the more reason to be using your surname.

SimplySteveRedux · 17/07/2019 19:10

Matthew.

I agree that multisyllabic names are good with a single syllable surname; mine have 4 and 3 syllable 1st names respectively. The "a" ending indeed needs caution. Personally I don't think you can be too careful when assessing the impact of nicknames / initials / close variations suggested by a name. We had to rule out a lot of otherwise nice names as "unsafe" when considering the likelihood near certainty of teasing at school.

An approach you very occasionally hear of, is creating a new "made-up" surname rather than double-barrelling. Feoktistan?

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 17/07/2019 20:53

Your surname is miles better. Much prettier.

boosterrooster · 17/07/2019 21:18

It needs to be a 2 or 3 syllable name for sure and you probably couldn't go with a name beginning with S either
